A subsequent detailed redescription (Jeannel 1919: 247) listed a single “type” as “une femelle aptère de Maji-Chumvi (Mus. Paris)” and another female from “ Samburu ”. The act of Jeannel (1919) is to be recognized as a valid lectotype designation according to ICZN (1999, Art. 74.6); the female from Samburu is to be treated as a paralectotype. When transferring the specimen from Fallou’s collection to the MNHN general collection, Villiers added a printed label stating the origin (Fallou’s collection) and also the label “ Holotype ”, probably because it was the single specimen (without pin-hole next to the specimen). However, in the original description, Fallou (1891: 10) didn’t designate a holotype and didn’t mention the number of specimens. Thus, this type specimen should be regarded as a syntype and not as holotype (ICZN 1999, Recommendation 73F).

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/039687C7FFAA003A92957A8F065AF83F	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The disk label with the handwritten information “ Senegal Guerin” is its only original label. It gives the locality (Senegal) and “Guerin” should be read “Guérin” which is, before 1836, the correct spelling for Guérin-Méneville (1799–1874) (in 1836, he changed his name back to his birthname). In MNHN, several type specimens—in particular in Diptera and Hymenoptera—bear exactly same handwritten disk label “ Senegal Guerin”. For these type specimens, the MNHN database indicates Guérin as the collector, but to our knowledge Guérin-Méneville did not collect himself in Senegal; probably he had in this country one or several collector associates sending him material. Obviously, the other labels have been added long after the description, in particular the red type label. The large label lined with black refers to the classification of Amyot & Serville (1843); it is typical of the labels realized in MNHN for the general collection of Heteroptera which was arranged during the second half of the 19th century according to this classification.

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/039687C7FFB5002592957FF602A7FCBF	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The individual studied, to be considered as a syntype, is most probably the sole survivor of the type material, being one of the 16 scant escaped specimens of the destruction of the rich collection of Mulsant (1797–1880). They were deposited at MNHN by R. Paulian (1913–2003) (see Paulian 1944).

The current status of this species is controversial. Maldonado (1990), following Puton (1874: 233, 1875: 96), treated this species as a synonym of Peirates hybridus (Scopoli, 1763). Coscarón (1997) followed this interpretation. Putshkov & Putshkov (1987: 135, 1996: 178) and Putshkov & Moulet (2009: 471), however, listed it as a synonym of P. stridulus (Fabricius, 1787). It must be stressed that P. stridulus and P. hybridus are two very similar species; Ribaut (1920) gave good diagnostic characters for them. The first author (YL) found that the syntype is more in accordance with the diagnostic characters of P. hybridus provided by Ribaut (1920). Accordingly, here we treat P. ambiguus as a junior synonym of P. hybridus, but a more detailed study is needed to clarify the relationship between P. hybridus and P. stridulus.

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/039687C7FFB0002092957FF60191FC06	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Fairmaire and V.A. Signoret were in charge of the descriptions of the Hemiptera collected in Gabon by H. Deyrolle in 1856 and 1857 sponsored by G.V. Mniszech and J. Thomson (the history of the trip is described in the same volume). The original description of Pirates maculicrus is most succinct: it does not indicate neither the number of studied specimens, nor the sex, and there is no mention of type. Although the type locality was not provided specifically for this particular species, as the entire work treats species from Gabon, it is evidently Gabon. A single specimen found in the MNHN bears a disc label with the numbers “2395” and “83” which proves that the specimen is a syntype of P. maculicrus. In the MNHN old register of the year [18]83, we can read, p. 84 (for the numbers 1919 to 2491): “ Insectes Myriapodes, Orthoptères, Névroptères, Hémiptères, Lépidoptères et Diptères provenant du Gabon donnés au Muséum de Paris, par Mr J. Thomson ”; and, in front of the number “2395”: “ Pirates maculicrus Fairm. 1 ” [i.e., one specimen].Although Villiers (1968a: 420) listed “type au Museum de Paris”, he gave similar statements for all species treated in his paper with no regard to the composition of their actual type material, therefore this statement can hardly be considered as an “assumption that the species-group taxon was based upon a single type specimen” in the sense of ICZN (1999, Art. 74.6). As we do not know if there were other specimens deposited in other collections, we treat the MNHN specimen as a syntype (ICZN 1999, Recommendation 73F).

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/039687C7FFB0002092957CCE01A7F91F	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The three males from Kijabé are to be considered as syntypes, whilst the additional male has no type status, as this locality was not mentioned in the original description. Only one syntype was found in MNHN.

In addition, Jeannel (1919: 250) rectified the body length of the species erroneously recorded in Jeannel (1917: 303). Zimsen (1964: 337) recorded the type material of this species as “ Reduvius carinatus Ent. Syst. Suppl. p. 545 · 36 »in Carolina Mus. Dom. Bosc«. (Syst. Rhyng. p. 278 · 57)—Paris 1 specimen ”. Unfortunately, the Bosc collection did not remain in its original condition after its arrival at MNHN in 1828. It was dismantled and the specimens were scattered in other boxes of the general collection. So, we cannot know if there were one or more specimens, and this type specimen remains the only known syntype of R. carinatus. This specimen was listed by Willemse (1985: 58) as the holotype, and this act is to be recognized as a valid lectotype designation according to ICZN (1999, Art. 74.6).

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/039687C7FFCA005192957830011CF871	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Hemprich and Ch. Ehrenberg in 1820–1825. According to Bradley (1968), the expedition brought an enormous amount of material for the Berlin Museum and Dr. Jürgen Deckert kindly confirmed the presence of three syntypes of Reduvius (Eumerus) fenestratus in MFN.

The female labelled “type” found in MNHN cannot be an additional syntype. It was placed—certainly by Villiers— among other non-type specimens of this species; however, the specimen in concern did not bear an identification label from Villiers’ hand, which is unusual for a type specimen. The round label bearing two numbers (“4180” and “34”) indicates that this female is not a type specimen. In the laboratory register dated 1834, number 4180 indicates: “Achat à Mr Botta d’Insectes recueillis par lui en Nubie. Tous portent ce numéro” (Purchase from Mr. Botta of insects collected by him in Nubia. All bear this number). Nubia is the region (North Sudan) of the type locality of R. fenestratus; the label “Type” could possibly mean “Topotype”, a term not regulated by the Code, defined as a specimen collected at the same location as the type specimen(s) regardless whether it is part of the type series or not.

The large rectangular label lined with black is characteristic of the labels made in MNHN during the second half of 19th century for specimens of the general collection of Heteroptera. At that time, the general collection was arranged according to the classification of Amyot & Serville (1843), and very often, C.J.B. Amyot worked at MNHN. “ Mechranius Amyot” appearing on one of the labels of the specimen is probably an unpublished generic name given by Amyot in accordance with his “Méthode mononymique” (Amyot 1848).

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/039687C7FFDC004C92957E6207A6FBDE	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
