Macropterous, black, slightly shiny, fore parts coarsely and densely punctate, abdomen moderately finely and moderately sparsely punctate; pubescence distinct, recumbent (Fig. 1). Antennae black. Basal segments of maxillary palpi yellow, apical half of segment 3 brownish, segment 4 dark brown or blackish. Legs black, basal segments of meso- and metatarsi brownish. Clypeus black, labrum black, sparsely pubescent.

Head slightly narrower than elytra (R 0.90–0.98, M 0.99, HT 68.4/68.8 = 0.99), frons broad (average distance between eyes 29–33), with two distinct longitudinal furrows, median part as broad as each of lateral parts, moderately elevated, not extending to level of inner eye margins; punctation moderately coarse and dense, diameters of punctures as large as basal diameter of second antennal segment; antennal tubercles, lateral parts posteriorly and median part narrowly impunctate, slightly shiny, with faint reticulation.Antennae moderately short, when reflexed not extending to posterior margin of pronotum, penultimate segments slightly transverse.

Pronotum strongly convex, slightly longer than broad (R 1.08–1.15, M 1.10, HT 54.4/50.2 = 1.08), broadest slightly before middle, distinctly constricted behind; no distinct impression present; punctation coarse and dense, diameter of average punctures as large as maximal diameter of second antennal segment.

Elytra subquadrate, slightly broader than head, about as long as broad or slightly longer than long (R 0.99–1.07, M 1.02, HT 68.8/68.4 = 1.01), shoulders slightly oblique, sides at first straight or slightly emarginated, then slightly rounded and widened behind, distinctly constricted in posterior two fifths, posterior margin moderately emarginate (sutural length 59–71); sutural and humeral impressions distinct; punctation slightly finer and more densely than on pronotum, diameter of punctures slightly smaller than maximal diameter of second antennal segment, interstices markedly smaller than diameter of punctures.

Abdomen broad, basal constriction of segments deep, tergite 7 with distinct membranous fringe apically; punctation on basal tergite 3 moderately coarse and dense, interstices mostly about as large as diameter of punctures or smaller, on remainder of abdomen fine, but distinct; punctures on tergite 5 as large as one medial eye facet, punctures on tergite 7 markedly finer. Legs moderately slender, metatarsi half as long as metatibiae, segment 1 shorter than segments 2 and 3 combined, slightly shorter than last, segment 4 not bilobed. Pronotum and elytra very shallowly reticulate or only with traces of microsculpture (visible at magnification of 70 x), abdomen densely and shallowly reticulate.

Male. Sternite 6 and 7 medio-posteriorly flattened, sternite 7 in this area finely and slightly more finely punctured as in remaining parts of sternite, sternite 8 with broad subtriangular emargination in about posterior fifth (Fig. 2). Sternite 9 moderately emarginated, with short apicolateral teeth (Fig. 9). Tergite 10 subrounded apicomedially (Fig. 10). Aedeagus 0.68–0.74 mm long (n = 5, M 0.72 mm, HT 0.74 mm), narrowed apically, in about two thirds and before apex slightly emarginated (Figs. 3–8), internal sac unmodified, formed by long, slightly curved tube (Figs. 13–14), parameres not reaching apex of median lobe (Figs. 3–8, 21–22), slightly widened apically, with numerous (about 15–21) setae.

Female. Sternite 8 slightly emarginated posteriomedially. Tergite 10 slightly emarginated posteriomedially (Fig. 12). Valvifer shortly acute posteriolaterally (Fig. 11).

Differential diagnosis. This new species belongs to the mendicus group (species with not bilobed tarsomere 4, abdomen with paratergites, first abdominal tergites without keels, aedeagus with expulsion hooks).

The general shape of aedeagus of S. hippoamicus Janák, sp. nov. with no traces of ventromedial carinae and with a curved tube in internal sac is similar as in S. galla Rougemont, 1981 (distributed in Ethiopia), S. naivashensis Puthz, 1971 (distributed in Kenya) and S. decellei Puthz, 1971 (distributed in D.R. Congo), but the new species differs from all this species by more parallel body and broader head (width of head/width of elytra ratio: S. hippoamicus Janák sp. nov.: 0.90–0.98, S. galla: 0.80–0.82, S. decellei: 0.86, S. naivashensis: 0.83 by holotype according Puthz (1971) and 0.81 in examined male) and also from: S. galla (Figs. 15, 18, 23–24) by broader apical part of median lobe, narrower parameres, markedly longer expulsion hooks and shorter apicolateral teeth of sternite 9, from S. naivashensis (Figs. 17, 20) by shorter parameres, apicolaterally slightly emarginated sides of median lobe and shorter apicolateral teeth of sternite 9 and from S. decellei (Figs. 16, 19) by laterally rounded and apicolaterally slightly emarginated sides of median lobe.

S. hippoamicus Janák, sp. nov. differs from four species of the S. mendicus group distributed in South Africa (S. arenicola, S. pretoriensis, S. gerardi, S. separatus) externally by narrower, more parallel body and mainly by absence of ventromedial carinae of median lobe of aedeagus (this part is more less regularly convex); from S. arenicola also by less shiny, smaller body with more finely punctate pronotum and shorter antennae; from S. pretoriensis also by broader head in relation to elytra and smaller unpunctured area on head; from externally similar S. gerardi also by smaller body, less dense punctation of elytra with not confluent punctures and by S. separatus also by markedly less shiny body and less apically narrowed abdomen.

Material used for comparison:

S. galla: Paratype ♂: ETHIOPIA, Lake Zuaï, Shoa, 27.ix.1971, G. de Rougemont (SMNS, coll. Puthz); photographs of 2 ♂ paratypes taken by Robert Douglas (Courtesy of Oxford University Museum of Natural History),

S. naivashensis: 1 ♂: Naivasha, Kenia, 15.i.73 (SMNS, coll. Puthz)

S. decellei: Holotype ♂: COLL. MUS. CONGO, Kalundwe (N. E. Gandajika), riv. Lualu, 25.iii.1959, J. Decelle (MRAC).

Derivatio nominis. The name of the new species is derived from hippopotamus and amicus, indicating that both type localities are inhabited by rich populations of hippos (Fig. 67).

Distribution. S. hippoamicus Janák, sp. nov. is currently known only from the Ndumo National Reserve and Santa Lucia (part of iSimangaliso Wetland Park) in KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa (Figs. 73–74).

Bionomics. The type specimens were found in Ndumo (Fig. 68) and St. Lucia (Fig. 67) by treading of shores of streams.

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/03B0B202FFE9BF6FC0AAF6BAFE92FEB9	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Janák det. 2022” (TMSA); Paratype ♀: same data as holotype (JJRC). Paratype with additional label “ PARATYPUS Stenus rugosellus sp. nov., J. Janák det. 2022”.

Description (n = 2). Body length 4.2–4.3 mm (HT 4.2 mm, PT 4.3 mm), fore parts 2.1–2.3 mm (HT 2.1 mm, PT 2.3 mm). Macropterous, black, shiny, fore parts coarsely and very densely punctate, pronotum and elytra rugose, many punctures confluent, abdomen moderately coarsely and moderately densely punctate; pubescence distinct, recumbent (Fig. 25). Antennae dark brown or blackish. Maxillary palpi yellowish, segments 3 and 4 slightly (HT) or markedly darkened (PT). Legs dark brown or black, basal third of femora reddish (HT) or dark brown (PT), tarsi dark brown. Clypeus black, labrum dark brown, moderately densely pubescent.

Head moderately narrower than elytra (R HT 77.9/96.5 = 0.81, PT 0.75), frons broad (average distance between eyes 38), with two distinct longitudinal furrows, median part as broad as each of the lateral parts, moderately elevated, not extending to the level of inner eye margins; punctation moderately coarse and dense, diameters of punctures as large as basal diameter of second antennal segment or slightly large, but not reached maximal diameter of this segment; antennal tubercles and median part impunctate, surface with faint reticulation. Antennae moderately long, when reflexed extending approximately to posterior fifth (HT) or fourth (PT) of pronotum, penultimate segments one-half longer than broad.

Pronotum strongly convex, slightly longer than broad (R HT 66.2/63.2 = 1.05, PT 1.07), broadest near middle, distinctly constricted behind; no distinct impression present; punctation coarse, very dense and rugose, many punctures confluent and forming short or longer mostly transverse rows, diameter of average punctures as large as maximal diameter of second antennal segment.

Elytra rounded trapezoid, slightly broader than head, slightly longer than broad (R HT 96.5/77.9 = 1.24, PT 1.34), shoulders slightly oblique, sides slightly rounded and markedly widened behind, distinctly constricted in posterior one-fifth, posterior margin moderately emarginate (sutural length 80–83); sutural, humeral and lateral impressions distinct; punctation slightly coarser than on pronotum, very dense and rugose, many punctures confluent, many punctures confluent and forming short or longer diagonal or transverse rows, diameter of punctures slightly larger than maximal diameter of second antennal segment, interstices mostly markedly smaller than diameter of punctures.

Abdomen broad (slightly narrower and more convex in HT than in PT), tergite 7 with distinct membranous fringe apically; punctation on basal tergites 3–5 moderately coarse and (except for middle) dense, interstices slightly to markedly smaller than diameter of punctures, on remainder of abdomen finer and sparser; punctures on tergite 4 markedly larger as one medial eye facet, punctures on tergite 7 markedly finer. Legs moderately slender, metatarsi two thirds as long as metatibiae, segment 1 slightly shorter than segments 2 and 3 combined, about as long as last, segment not bilobed. Pronotum and elytra finely reticulate (visible at magnification of 70 x), abdomen densely and shallowly reticulate.

Male. Sternite 7 medio-posteriorly flattened, finely and sparsely punctured, sternite 8 medially flattened, shallowly and broadly emarginated (Fig. 26). Sternite 9 deeply emarginated (Fig. 28). Tergite 10 broadly rounded (Fig. 29). Aedeagus 0.72 mm long, pointed, narrowed apically, sides in middle slightly emarginate (Fig. 27), parameres exceeds markedly median lobe, slightly widened apically, with numerous (about 20–22) setae.

Female. Sternite 8 broadly rounded apically, without any projection.Tergite 10 broadly and shallowly emarginate (Fig. 31). Valvifer acute posteriorly (Fig. 30).

Variability. The differences between the male holotype and the female paratype mentioned in the description I consider as a variability in the range of the species, which is supported mainly with in the capensis group exceptional rugose pronotum and elytra with many punctures confluent and forming short or longer rows.

Differential diagnosis. This new species belongs to the capensis group (species with unbilobed tarsomere 4, abdomen with paratergites, flatter, with median keels broad and short). It can be distinguished from the species of the group by rugose punctation of pronotum and elytra. The general shape and the aedeagus shape of the new species is similar as in S. hessei (Figs. 32–33), but the new species differs above already mentioned rugose punctation also by more parallel and apically less narrowed median lobe with broader expulsion bands and shorter much less inside curved apicolateral teeth of male sternite 8.

Derivatio nominis. The name is derived from rugosus, referring to rugose punctation of pronotum and elytra.

Distribution. S. rugosellus sp. nov. is currently known only from surroundings of Stoneybrook farm near Kokstad in KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa.

Bionomics. The type specimens were found by treading of reeds on banks of a dam together with below described S. volkerputhzianus Janák, sp. nov. and S. callens Puthz.

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/03B0B202FFE2BF63C0AAF446FC02FD11	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Janák lgt. (JJRC). All with additional label “ PARATYPUS Stenus volkerputhzianus sp. nov., J. Janák det. 2021”.

Description (n = 10). Body length 4.3–5.3 mm (M 4.9 mm, HT 5.1 mm), fore parts 2.5–2.9 mm (M 2.7 mm, HT 2.7 mm). Macropterous, black, shiny, fore parts moderately coarsely and moderately densely punctate, abdomen moderately coarsely and moderately densely punctate; pubescence short, recumbent (Fig. 38). Two first segments and basal part of third segment of antennae yellowish, following segments more or less infuscate, club dark brown. Basal segments of maxillary palpi yellow, apical half of segment 3 and segment 4 brownish. Basal half of femora reddish-yellow, apical half of femora, tibiae and tarsi brown to dark brown. Clypeus black, labrum dark brown, moderately densely pubescent.

Head moderately narrower than elytra (R 0.92–0.98, M 0.96, HT 97.3/113.2 = 0.86), frons broad (average distance between eyes 45–48), with two distinct longitudinal furrows, median part as broad as each of lateral parts, moderately elevated, not extending to level of inner eye margins; punctation moderately coarse and dense, diameters of punctures as large as basal diameter of second antennal segment or slightly large, but not reached maximal diameter of this segment; antennal tubercles and median part impunctate, surface smooth, without any reticulation. Antennae moderately long, when reflexed extending approximately to posterior margin of pronotum, penultimate segments one-half longer than broad.

Pronotum strongly convex, markedly longer than broad (R 1.10–1.17, M 1.12, HT 83.3/76.0 =1.10), broadest near middle, distinctly constricted behind; anterior transverse impression deep, thus anterior margin seems to be transversally elevated; punctation coarse and dense, diameter of average punctures slightly smaller than maximal diameter of second antennal segment.

Elytra subquadrate, moderately broader than head, about as long as broad or slightly broader than long (R length/width 0.93–1.01, M 0.97, HT 108.3/113.2 = 0.96), shoulders slightly oblique, sides slightly rounded and widened behind, distinctly constricted in posterior one-third, posterior margin moderately emarginated (sutural length 83–92); sutural and humeral impressions distinct, additional median impression in anterior half present, thus area between this and sutural impression seems to be elevated, lateral impression in posterior half present; punctation slightly coarser than on pronotum, moderately dense, diameter of punctures slightly larger than maximal diameter of second antennal segment, interstices mostly slightly smaller than diameter of punctures.

Abdomen broad, basal constriction of segments deep, tergite 7 with distinct membranous fringe apically; punctation on tergite 3 moderately coarse and sparse, punctures larger that those on head, but smaller than those on pronotum, interstices except for middle about as large as diameter of punctures, on following tergites gradually finer but not sparser; punctures on tergite 5 as large as one medial eye facet, punctures on tergite 7 markedly finer. Tergite 10 broadly and shallowly emarginated (Figs. 44, 46). Legs moderately slender, metatarsi two thirds as long as metatibiae, segment 1 slightly shorter than segments 2 and 3 combined, about as long than last, segment 4 deeply bilobed. Pronotum except for medio-anterior part and elytra very finely and shallowly reticulate or only with traces of reticulation (visible at magnification of 70 x), abdomen densely and shallowly reticulate, remainder of surface smooth, without any reticulation.

Male.Apical fourth of femora moderately enlarged. Sternite 5 medially moderately densely and finely punctured, sternite 6 and 7 medio-posteriorly flattened, very finely and sparsely punctured and long setose, sternite 8 moderately broad, inwards narrowed subtriangular emargination in about posterior half (Fig. 39). Sternite 9 with two distinct emarginations (Fig. 43). Aedeagus 0.94–1.05 mm long (n = 5, M 1.01 mm, HT 1.02 mm), gradually narrowed apically, in middle and before apex slightly emarginate (Figs. 40–42), parameres exceeds markedly median lobe, widened apically, with numerous (about 20–22) setae.

Female. Sternite 8 broadly rounded apically, without any projection. Valvifer acute posteriorly (Fig. 45).

Differential diagnosis. This new species belongs to the bifrons group (species with bilobed tarsomere 4, abdomen without paratergites, tergite 10 apically rounded or slightly emarginated, sternite 9 and valvifer acute apically, legs markedly bicolored, aedeagus without inner flagellum). It can be distinguished from the species of the group with similar general shape of aedeagus (median lobe gradually narrowed apically): S. assimulatus Puthz, 1971, S. diabolus Puthz, 1967, S. kwaiensis Schubert, 1906 and Stenus pulchellulus Puthz, 1994 as follows: from S. kwaiensis Schubert, 1906 by markedly bicolored legs, apical part of median lobe of the aedeagus laterally concave, absence of setose area in posterior part of tergite 9, narrower apicolateral tooth of valvifera, from S. assimulatus Puthz, 1971 by much markedly apically narrowed median lobe; from S. diabolus Puthz, 1967 by narrower median lobe and markedly widened apical part of parameres and male sternite 8 with two emarginations and from Stenus pulchellulus Puthz, 1994 by not acute (but narrowly rounded) apical point of the median lobe.

Derivatio nominis. The species is dedicated to Volker Puthz, nestor of Stenus taxonomy as thanks of his support of my work on this genus.

Distribution. S. volkerputhzianus Janák, sp. nov. is currently known from KwaZulu-Natal, Free State and Gauteng provinces, South Africa.

Bionomics. The type specimens were found by treading in swamp, wetland, river or dam banks (Figs. 69, 70).

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/03B0B202FFE7BF66C0AAF052FA1AFE29	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Janák lgt. (TMSA), “ HOLOTYPUS Stenus spiniferoides sp. nov., J. Janák det. 2021” (TMSA). Paratype ♀: same data as holotype (JJRC). Paratype with additional label “ PARATYPUS Stenus spiniferoides sp. nov., J. Janák det. 2021”.

Description (n = 2). Body length 3.6 mm (HT) and 3.9 mm (PT), fore parts 2.0 mm (HT) and 2.1 mm (PT). Macropterous, black, shiny, fore parts moderately coarsely and moderately densely punctate, abdomen moderately coarsely and moderately densely punctate; pubescence distinct, recumbent (Fig. 59). Two first segments and basal parts of segments 3–5 of antennae reddish, remaining parts of segments more or less infuscate, club brown. Basal segments of maxillary palpi yellow, apical half of segment 3 slightly infuscate, apical three quarters of segment 4 brownish. Basal third of femora reddish, apical two thirds of femora and tibiae brown to dark brown, tarsi brown. Clypeus black, labrum dark brown, moderately densely pubescent.

Head moderately narrower than elytra (HT 68.1/85.8 = 0.79, PT 0.74), frons broad (average distance between eyes 33–36), with two distinct longitudinal furrows, median part as broad as each of lateral parts, moderately elevated, not extending to level of inner eye margins; punctation moderately coarse and dense, diameters of punctures as large as basal diameter of second antennal segment; antennal tubercles, median part and posteriolateral parts largely impunctate, surface smooth, without any reticulation. Antennae moderately long, when reflexed extending approximately to posterior margin of pronotum, penultimate segments slightly longer than broad.

Pronotum strongly convex, distinctly longer than broad (HT 61.3/55.9 = 1.10), broadest near middle, distinctly constricted behind; with distinct anterior transverse impression and lateral impressions in posterior half, thus anterior margin seems to be elevated; punctation coarse and irregularly dense, diameter of average punctures as large as basal diameter of second antennal segment or slightly larger, punctation in median part in general less dense and with unpunctured elevations.

Elytra subquadrate, moderately broader than head, about as long as broad or slightly broader than long (R length/width HT = 85.3/85.8 = 0.99, PT 0.95), shoulders slightly oblique, sides slightly rounded and widened behind, distinctly constricted in posterior one-third, posterior margin moderately emarginated (sutural length 74– 76); sutural and humeral impressions distinct; two lateral impression present, first in middle and second in posterior quarter; punctation markedly coarser than on pronotum, moderately dense, diameter of punctures slightly larger than maximal diameter of second antennal segment, interstices mostly as large as diameter of punctures, in some areas less dense and with few small unpunctured areas.

Abdomen quite narrow, basal constriction of segments deep, tergite 7 with distinct membranous fringe apically; punctation on tergite 3 moderately coarse and dense, interstices about one half or up to twice larger than diameter of punctures, on following tergites gradually finer but not sparser; punctures on tergite 5 as large as one medial eye facet, punctures on tergite 7 markedly finer. Tergite 10 apicomedially spinose (Figs. 64–65). Legs moderately slender, metatarsi two thirds as long as metatibiae, segment 1 slightly shorter than segments 2 and 3 combined, markedly shorter than the last, segment 4 deeply bilobed. Fore parts and abdomen not reticulate, only tergite 8 with very faint traces of reticulation (visible at magnification of 70 x).

Male. Apical half of femora moderately enlarged. Sternite 6 apico-medially moderately densely and finely punctured and long setose, sternite 7 apico-medially flattened, very finely and sparsely punctured and long setose with posterior margin markedly emarginated, sternite 8 along middle slightly flattened, with deep, inwards narrowed subtriangular emargination in about posterior one-fifth (Fig. 62). Sternite 9 deeply emarginated apico-medially, with long apicolateral teeth (Fig. 63). Aedeagus 0.67 mm, narrowed apically, in apical fourth slightly emarginate (Fig. 61), parameres exceed markedly the median lobe, widened apically, with numerous (about 31–33) setae.

Female. Sternite 8 broadly rounded apically. Valvifer acute posteriorly (Fig. 66).

Differential diagnosis. S. spiniferoides Janák, sp. nov. is very similar to S. spinifer Fauvel, 1907 (the holotype was examined, Figs. 53–58), but differs by larger and more markedly unpunctured areas and more coarse and less dense punctation on pronotum and elytra, by more slender aedeagus with more apically enlarged parameres and by much more modified last sternites in male (male sternites 6 and 7 in S. spinifer are almost unmodified, shortly setose, posterior margin of sternite 7 only with almost indistinct very narrow and shallow emargination (Fig. 54) and emargination of male sternite 8 is larger and less deep: see Fig. 56).

Derivatio nominis. The name refers to the similarity to Stenus spinifer.

Distribution. S. spiniferoides Janák, sp. nov. is currently known from Bo-Langvlei lake in Western Cape Province.

Bionomics. The type specimens were found by treading of dense reeds on a lake banks together with S. separatus (Figs. 72).

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/03B0B202FFF8BF7AC0AAF372FE8AF9F1	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
