Sharp (1878) erroneously described labial palpi of Atopida as “not forked”, i. e. the apical palpomere arising from the top of the penultimate one. This mistake was corrected by Broun (1893) who examined several species of Atopida, all with furcate labial palpi, i. e. with apical palpomere arising from the side of the penultimate one.

	http://treatment.plazi.org/id/A0384152FF9A02384DE7FB8DFF5CF98C	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Bursal sclerite (L 0.40 mm, W 0.19 mm) consisting of two rod-like sclerites in anterior portion and two additional, well pigmented sclerites hooked at posterior end.

Measurements and ratios. Males (n = 4) TL 5.50–6.9 mm (6.0 mm), PL 1.0– 1.33 mm (1.13 mm), PW 1.60– 2.15 mm (1.84 mm), EL 4.40–5.60 mm (4.91 mm), EW 2.40–3.21 mm (2.76 mm), TL/EW 2.07–2.33 (2.18), PW/PL 1.60–1.70 (1.63), EL/EW 1.69–1.97 (1.79), EL/PL 4.19–4.72 (4.37), EW/PW 1.49–1.53 (1.50). The species occurs in northern part of North Island, in Northland, Auckland and Coromandel areas (Fig. 18A).

Remarks. The species is rather rare in the collections, what is a bit surprising for a species described already in 1840s. Probably its relatively big size attracted attention of White. Females that we identified as A. castanea differ considerably in the details of the 1) pronotum shape, and 2) elytral setation. Some of the specimens have distinctly explanate anterolateral angles (especially specimens from Mangamuka, Fig. 1B), while other do not exhibit this feature (Fig. 1D). Setation of elytra is either short and adherent or longer and semierect. As the morphology of bursal sclerite seems to be rather stable in all the specimens we assume the above mentioned differences should be attributed to infraspecific variation, although the problem needs to be studied more thoroughly in future.

	http://treatment.plazi.org/id/A0384152FF94023C4DE7F9C4FAB3FE23	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The species was described from Mount Manaia on the Whangerei Heads peninsula. It is widely distributed in northern part of North Island, mostly in Northland and Auckland areas, sometimes also in Bay of Plenty and Coromandel (Fig. 18B).

Remarks. Broun (1910) correctly noted that Atopida grahami is similar to A. hirta but differs in the sculpture of the thorax. What he did not realised is the fact that this difference was due to the sexual dimorphism, and A. grahami is in fact a female of A. hirta.

	http://treatment.plazi.org/id/A0384152FF9702234DE7FE69FE7BFC2B	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Body of moderate size (TL 3.8–4.6 mm), setation short, adherent, punctation of pronotum not granulate, females apterous. Male genitalia with wide, rounded apical portion of trigonium. Tergite VII in females with oval depression; this structure is unknown in any other Atopida species. Bursal sclerite with paired rod-like sclerites and additional small sclerite between the rods. A. suffusa is the only species with similar aedeagus and bursal sclerite but its dorsum is covered with long, erect setae.

Redescription. Male. Body elongated, moderately large (TL 3.9–4.6 mm), convex. Body yellowish-brown to dark brown. Punctation on head subtly granulate, punctures touching each other, on pronotum not granulate in central portion of the disc, sometimes granulate on sides, but granules flat and sparse, punctures separated by 0.3– 1.0× diameter of a puncture, punctation on elytra simple, punctures separated by 0.5–0.7× diameter of a puncture. Body covered with very short, yellowish, strongly adherent setae. Supraantennal ridges well-marked, slightly elevated. Pronotum widest slightly before middle of its length, sides curved, anterolateral angles slightly produced, posterolateral angles obtuse, rounded. Elytra in some specimens with two faint longitudinal carinae, humeri wellmarked. Ventrite 5 rounded, apex truncate. Penis elongate (L 0.59 mm, W 0.25 mm), with very wide trigonium, rounded in apical portion, a little shorter than parameroids, covered with very short setae; parameroids widely triangular, axe-shaped, apices rounded, apical part covered with punctures; pala triangular, slightly longer than parameroids. Tegmen (L 0.57 mm, W 0.39 mm) relatively wide, with triangular parameres, covered with numerous minute setae in apical portion.

Female. Body medium sized (TL 3.8–4.4 mm). Supraantennal ridges well-marked, only slightly elevated. Punctation on disc of pronotum sparser than in males, punctation on elytra coarser, punctures separated by 0.5× diameter of a puncture. Ventrite 5 rounded, with deep, semicircular emargination at apex, tergite VII with oval depression (Fig. 8D) in apical portion. Ventrite 4 with two large, oblique setal patches. Bursal sclerite consisting of two lateral rods (L 0.40 mm) widened in posterior portion and armed with denticles on outer parts of anterior portion, additional small, v-shaped sclerite present between rods.

Measurements and ratios. Males (n = 10) TL 3.85–4.60 mm (4.10 mm), PL 0.70–0.85 mm (0.74 mm), PW 1.10–1.35 mm (1.23 mm), EL 3.10–3.70 mm (3.35 mm), EW 1.75–2.15 mm (1.93 mm), TL/EW 2.02–2.23 (2.13), PW/PL 1.53–1.79 (1.66), EL/EW 1.64–1.82 (1.73), EL/PL 4.31–4.93 (4.53), EW/PW 1.52–1.68 (1.57). Body small to moderately large (TL 3.3–4.5 mm), colouration variable. Similar to some other Atopida from South Island, certain identification is possible only on the basis of genital structures: trigonium much shorter than parameroids, curved laterally, parameroids triangularly pointed at apices, bursal sclerite subtriangular in outline, with paired tubercles in central portion.

Description. Male. Body elongated, moderately large (TL 3.7–4.5 mm), moderately convex. Body colouration variable, from yellowish to brown, head and pronotum slightly darker, elytra yellowish with dark suture or uniformly yellowish to dark brown. Punctation on head and pronotum granulate, strong and dense, punctures touching each other, punctation on pronotum becoming more sparse towards the middle and base, surface of pronotum uneven, in some specimens forming two tubercles in basal portion of pronotum, punctation on elytra simple, coarse, punctures separated by 0.3–0.7× diameter of a puncture. Body covered with moderately long, protruding, yellowish setae, more numerous and ruffled on head and pronotum. Supraantennal ridges well-marked, elevated, forming triangular flap. Pronotum widest slightly before middle of its length, sides curved, lateral carinae crenulate, anterolateral angles produced, triangular, pointed, posterolateral angles right-angled. Base of pronotum with longitudinal depression along posterior margin. Elytra without carinae, humeri well-marked. Ventrite 5 rounded, apex subtly truncate. Penis (L 0.70 mm, W 0.36 mm) elongate, with explanate lateral lobes, trigonium very short, narrow, curved laterally at ~right angle; parameroids elongated, sinuate, outer edges subtly denticulate, apices pointed, covered with punctures; pala triangular, very short, significantly shorter than parameroids. Tegmen (L 0.67 mm, W 0.46 mm) with narrow, triangular parameres, covered with scarce punctures and numerous denticles.

Female. Body small to moderately big (TL 3.3–4.1 mm), brachypterous. Supraantennal ridges well-marked, elevated, forming triangular flaps in some specimens. Colouration and punctation like in males, but central portion of pronotal disc sparsely punctate, with shining interspaces. Ventrite 5 rounded, with very shallow emargination at apex. Lateral portions of ventrites 3 and 4 rather big, oblique setal patches, small oblique patches visible also on ventrite 5. Bursal sclerite big (L 0.38 mm, W 0.32 mm) consisting of two interconnected plates—one with pair of tubercles visible in central portion of sclerite, the second forming hook-like processes resembling long spines in dorsal view.

Measurements and ratios. Males (n = 10) TL 3.65–4.45 mm (4.05 mm), PL 0.65–0.75 mm (0.69 mm), PW 1.10–1.30 mm (1.19 mm), EL 3.00– 3.70 mm (3.36 mm), EW 1.70–2.00 mm (1.89 mm), TL/EW 1.92–2.25 (2.14), PW/PL 1.57–1.86 (1.73), EL/EW 1.59–1.89 (1.78), EL/PL 4.33–5.46 (4.88), EW/PW 1.50–1.68 (1.59). Female (n = 1) TL 3.55 mm, PL 0.70 mm, PW 1.15 mm, EL 2.80 mm, EW 1.75 mm, TL/EW 2.0, PW/PL 1.6, EL/EW 1.6, EL/PL 4.0, EW/PW 1.5.

Distribution. Distributed in several areas of South Island: Marlborough Sounds, Nelson, Buller, and Westland (Fig. 18F).

Remarks. While all males examined are very uniform in terms of morphology, it is not the case of females. The description of female is based on a specimen from Glenhope, identified by T. Broun. Its punctation on pronotum is very similar to that of the holotype. Among numerous female specimens that we initially identified as A. montana, several striking differences were noticed after a closer examination, including level of wing reduction, differences in punctation of pronotal disc (almost smooth and impunctate in some specimens), and even more striking differences in arrangement of abdominal setal patches. A. montana is apparently a species complex that needs further studies in order to recognize particular species it includes. Currently we distinguished three additional female morphotypes, tentatively named after the localities of specimens:

1) ‘Mt Robinson’ (Figs 14A, D, G)—brachypterous; setal patches present on ventrite 4, elongated; bursal sclerite consisting of triangular sclerites (L 0.17 mm);

2) ‘Port Underwood’ (Figs 14B, E, H)—brachypterous; setal patches present on ventrite 4, very small, rounded; ventrite 5 with two pointed, triangular denticles on apex; bursal sclerite consisting of triangular sclerites (L 0.23 mm);

3) ‘Pelorus Bridge’ (Figs 14C, F, I)—apterous; abdomen without setal patches (!); bursal sclerite with two rods (L 0.21 mm).

 http://treatment.plazi.org/id/A0384152FF8D02244DE7FF24FEA1FD67	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Body moderately sized to large (TL 4.0– 5.1 mm), rather stout, covered with long, erect setae. Externally somewhat resembling A. villosa, but easy to distinguish on the basis of genitalia. Penis with wide, bulbous trigonium and bursal sclerite with long lateral rods and small, v-shaped central sclerite are known only in A. impressa. Easy to distinguish from A. impressa on the basis of external morphology, especially erect setation of dorsum.

Redescription. Male. Body moderately sized to large (TL 4.00– 5.10 mm) elongated, moderate size, moderately convex. Body brown, elytra a bit lighter than head and pronotum, antennae and legs lighter. Punctation on head and pronotum granulate, strong and dense, punctures touching each other, granules a bit flattened in central portion of pronotal disc, separated by ca. 0.5 diameter; punctation on elytra simple, punctures separated by 0.5–1.0× diameter of a puncture, interspaces shining. Body covered with long, erect, yellowish setae. Supraantennal ridges well-marked, elevated. Pronotum widest slightly before middle of its length, sides curved, anterolateral angles not produced, posterolateral angles obtuse. Elytra without carinae, humeri well-marked. Ventrite 5 rounded. Penis elongated (L 0.62 mm, W 0.24 mm), trigonium strongly widened in apical portion, oval, shorter than parameroids; parameroids elongated, apices obliquely truncate, axe-shaped, apical part covered with few punctures; pala subrectangular, narrow, ca. as long as parameroids. Tegmen (L 0.63 mm, W 0.42 mm) with narrow, subtriangular parameres, narrowing at apices, covered with numerous punctures and setation near inner margin of apical portion.

Female. Body moderately big (TL 4.0– 4.6 mm), brachypterous. Supraantennal ridges marked, not elevated. Pronotum more transverse than in males, punctation of elytra coarser. Ventrite 5 rounded, with deeply, semicircularly emarginated apex. Central portion of ventrite 4 with two oblique setal patches. Bursal sclerite consisting of two lateral rods (L 0.30 mm) widened in posterior portion and armed with small denticles on outer parts of anterior portion, additional small, v-shaped sclerite present between rods.

Measurements and ratios. Males (n = 6) TL 4.00– 5.10 mm (4.56 mm), PL 0.70–0.85 mm (0.78 mm), PW 1.35–1.65 mm (1.47 mm), EL 3.60–4.25 mm (3.83 mm), EW 2.05–2.35 mm (2.18 mm), TL/EW 1.95–2.23 (2.09), PW/PL 1.75–2.06 (1.87), EL/EW 1.67–1.84 (1.76), EL/PL 4.50–5.36 (4.90), EW/PW 1.42–1.56 (1.49). Described from Greymouth in Buller area, but most of the specimens examined were collected in various localities in Westland area of South Island (Fig. 18I).

Remarks. The species is an unusual example of a marsh beetle with genital structures (both aedeagus and bursal sclerite) hardly distinguishable from another species from which it can be easily separated on the basis of external morphology. Usually species of marsh beetles that are externally almost identical differ considerably at least in male genital features.

 http://treatment.plazi.org/id/A0384152FF83022F4DE7FB19FE44FA9B	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The main sources of problems with identification of Atopida are: significant sexual dimorphism, large infraspecific variability, similarity of male genitalia of several species groups, and the fact that bursal sclerites of females of several species are not very distinctive, often rod-like. With the following key, it is possible to identify males of all known species and females of most species (females of undescribed species of the montana complex are included). In most cases dissection of genitalia is needed, as well as examination of abdominal setal patches, bursal sclerites and hind wings of females.

1.
