AF0087D7FFCAFFFEFF48FF061793FBBC.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Body small to medium-sized (3.9 – 7.4 mm), with moderately small, slightly or distinctly transverse pronotum; aedeagus with narrow median lobe, gradually narrowed toward the subacute or rounded apex, parameres narrow or with very wide (G. paramerus) apical portions, internal sac with strongly sclerotized, wide, and moderately long flagellum. Species included. G. plagiatus (Fabricius, 1798), G. corsicus Fagel, 1958, G. magnus Shavrin, 2020, G. nigrita (P. W. J. Müller, 1821), G. paramerus Shavrin, 2000, G. pedemontanus Fagel, 1958, G. shii Cheng & Peng, 2020, G. suturalis (Lacordaire, 1835).	en	Shavrin, Alexey V. AF0087D7FFCAFFFEFF48FF061793FBBC.taxon	distribution	Distribution. Species of the plagiatus group are distributed in the Palaearctic Region, from the British islands across Europe, Caucasus, Middle Asia to Siberia and central China. Additional species of this group can be found in North America, but the Nearctic species are in need of a comprehensive revision. Bionomics. The species of the plagiatus group can be regarded as inhabitants of alluvial communities. The species inhabit gravel, stone, and sand-stone banks of streams and rivers; some East Palaearctic species were taken by sifting moss and litter near banks of streams and rivers (G. paramerus, G. shii). The species are represented from low to high elevations (70 – 4500 m a. s. l.). The beetles are usually collected from May to October. Bionomic data for G. magnus are unknown.	en	Shavrin, Alexey V. AF0087D7FFCAFFFEFF48FF061793FBBC.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Regarding the presence of a strongly sclerotized flagellum, the plagiatus group is somewhat similar to the Japanese aokii and sinuatus groups, from which it can be distinguished by the wider apical portions of the parameres. Additionally, it can be distinguished from the aokii group by the absence of two short parallel structures in the middle part of the median lobe, and from the sinuatus group by significantly narrower elytra and median lobe. I not provided here data on G. magnus, G. paramerus and G. shii in the species list below, because all labels data and figures of the habitus and the adeagus of these species can be found in Cheng et. al. (2020).	en	Shavrin, Alexey V. AF0087D7FFCBFFF2FF48FF06171CFB68.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Staphylinus plagiatus Fabricius, 1798 was originally described based on an unspecified number of syntypes from “ Europa borealis ”. The studied male (Figs 1 – 2) from ZMUC is designated here as the lectotype in order to fix the identity of the name. Some authors in the late 19 th century considered this species as a variety of G. nigrita (e. g. Reitter 1870). Lesteva globulicollis Mannerheim, 1830 was originally described from “ … lacus Saima in Finlandia orientali … ”. The studied holotype (Figs 3 – 4) from the collection of MZHF is partly damaged. It seems to have been removed from the original pin and dissected (Fig. 3). For a long time, this taxon was considered as a distinct species (e. g. Thomson 1861, Redtenbacher 1874, Ganglbauer 1895). It was one of the examples of species with confusing interpretations, despite the fact that it was synonymized with G. plagiatus by Erichson (1840). Geodromicus globulicollis was considered as a variety of G. brevicollis Fauvel, 1875 by Neumann (1907), G. curtipennis Fauvel, 1871 by Bernhauer & Schubert (1910) and Scheerpeltz (1933), and G. lituratus Kraatz, 1857 (now a synonym of G. kunzei (Heer, 1839 )) by Luze (1903). Khnzorian (1962) cited Caucasian G. constricticollis Eppelsheim, 1890 as a subspecies of G. globulicollis. Several species were cited as synonyms of G. globulicollis: G. brevicollis by Bernhauer & Schubert (1910), G. curtipennis by Ganglbauer (1895), G. kunzei (Heer 1839) by Kraatz (1857) and Ganglbauer (1895), G. lituratus by Bernhauer & Schubert (1910), G. longipes (Mannerheim, 1830) by Kraatz (1857), Ganglbauer (1895) and others, and others, G. puncticollis (Weise, 1875) by Eppelsheim (1887), Trichodromeus flavipes (Motschulsky, 1860) by Gemminger & Harold (1868) and T. transversus (Motschulsky, 1860) by Fauvel (1871). As a result of such confusing interpretations, many faunistic records require clarification, e. g., the record of G. plagiatus a. nigrita from Tiflis (= Tbilisi) by Eichler (1930). Anthophagus verticalis Say, 1831 was originally described based on an unspecified number of syntypes from “ Pennsylvania ” (USA) and compared with Anthophagus brunneus Say, 1823. Later it was recorded from “ Lake Superior ” by LeConte (1850). Without studying type material Fauvel (1878) synonymized it with the European G. nigrita. Ganglbauer (1895) and subsequent compilers cited A. verticalis as a synonym of G. plagiatus. This species, in turn, was synonymized by Casey (1894) with the North American G. brunneus (Say, 1823). This synonymization was overlooked by compilers who synonymized this species with other European taxa. I included this name to the list of synonyms of G. plagiatus with the mark <?!>, because it seems that “ A. verticalis ” is not conspecific with the Palaearctic G. plagiatus and the type material should be studied. In general, all Nearctic species of Geodromicus require revision. Based on my data, Geodromicus brunneus, with which Casey synonymized A. verticalis, includes two different and not closely related species from Canada and the USA. Lesteva canaliculata Stephens, 1831 was originally described from Britain based on an unspecified number of syntypes: “ Taken in Scotland by Mr. Hooker, and also found in Cumberland: not common. Near Edinburgh ”. Waterhouse (1858) synonymized it with G. globulicollis. Subsequent authors considered L. canaliculata as a synonym of G. plagiatus (see Herman 2001). According to Pope (1977), G. plagiatus does not occur in Great Britain (see also Duff 2012) and old records of this species are doubtful. The type locality of L. canaliculata was not included in the map of G. plagiatus (Fig. 28). Geodromicus anthracinus Brisout de Barneville, 1863 was originally described based on an unspecified number of syntypes from “ Mont-Louis ” (Southeast France) and was compared with G. plagiatus. Fauvel (1871 [= 1872]), Ganglbauer (1895) and subsequent authors considered G. anthracinus as a synonym of G. plagiatus. Geodromicus subnigritus was originally described as an aberration of G. plagiatus without citing of the type locality. It was recorded by Palm (1961) from Sweden. Zanetti (1987) synonymized it with G. plagiatus. I studied two specimens with additional labels “ Typus ” and “ paratypoid ” from MHNG. Both specimens are from Austria. In any case, this name is unavailable (see details in Herman 2001). Geodromicus pyrenaeus Jarrige, 1963 was originally described from the Pyrenees, France (“ Gave d’Holçarté, Larrau, 600 m, Basses Pyrénées ”). A study of the type material did not reveal any external and internal morphological differences between this material and other specimens of G. plagiatus. Consequently, G. pyrenaeus is synonymized with it. Geodromicus lapponicus A. Bordoni, 1984 was originally described based on an immature male with a strongly deformed median lobe (Bordoni 1984: fig. III. 1) without exact locality from “ Lapponia ”. A study of the holotype revealed that it belongs to G. plagiatus. Schülke & Smetana (2015) cited this name as a nomen dubium. Geodromicus klimai A. Bordoni, 1984 was originally described based on five specimens without exact locality from “ Caucaso ”. I studied the holotype and did not find any morphological differences suggesting that it should represent a distinct species. The illustrations of the apical portion of the median lobe provided by Bordoni (1984: fig. III. 3) is somewhat similar to that of G. nigrita (Figs. 36 – 40), but the aedeagus of the holotype is slightly narrower. Thus, G. klimai is synonymized with G. plagiatus. Geodromicus schoenmanni Bordoni, 1984 was originally described based on six specimens without exact locality from “ Caucaso ”. I studied the holotype (Fig. 6) and three paratypes and found no clear morphological differences between them and other specimens of G. plagiatus. The shape of the aedeagus (Fig. 18) is similar to specimens from other localities. In consequence, it is synonymized with G. plagiatus. Regarding the habitus, punctation of the forebody, shape of the elytra (slightly broadened apicad), and general shape of the aedeagus, G. plagiatus is very similar to G. nigrita (see below). According to European keys (e. g. Zanetti 2011), G. plagiatus can be distinguished from G. nigrita by paler legs, sometimes by the presence of a broad yellow to reddish spot on each elytron, and the shape of the apical portion of the aedeagus. The coloration of G. plagiatus varies from yellow-brown to dark-brown, and legs are yellow to dark-brown (Fig. 5). The presence of a broad spot on each elytron occurs in several species of the genus. This feature does not allow a reliable distinction of G. plagiatus and G. nigrita. I observed the presence of similar spots in several Palaearctic species, which usually have unicolorous elytra: G. brevicollis, G. bodemeyeri Bernhauer, 1902, G. convexicollis Luze, 1903, G. latiusculus Eppelsheim, 1878, etc. Many authors of the last decades have interpreted the presence of elytral spots as a significant feature in their diagnoses, which has resulted in various interpretations of different taxa and wrong synonymizations. Considerable interspecific variability of G. plagiatus was observed in body size (from 3.9 to 6.7 mm), punctation of the head and pronotum (finer and sparser to coarser and denser), the proportions of the pronotum, the shape of the apical portion of the median lobe, and the length of the parameres (Figs. 12 – 27). The shape of the apical portion of the median lobe is one of the main features for the distinction from related species. The apex is narrower in G. plagiatus and distinctly broader in G. nigrita (Figs. 36 – 40). The aedeagus of G. plagiatus were figured by Palm (1948: fig. 183), Lohse (1958: Fig. 2), Fagel (1958: Fig. 1), Smetana (1959: Fig. 8), Lohse (1964: Fig. 2), Tóth (1982: Fig. F), Bordoni (1984: Fig. 1 – 2), and Zanetti (1987: Figs 96 e, 96 f). The figure of the aedeagus provided by Smetana (1959: fig. 11) as G. globulicollis refers to G. kunzei. I decided to give figures of the aedeagi of specimens from different localities to show variability of their shapes (Fig. 12 – 27). In general, the shape of the aedeagus is slightly variable: the preapical portion of the median lobe can be somewhat broader (Fig. 19) or narrower (Fig. 15), with subacute (Figs. 12 – 15, 17, 21) or acute (Figs. 16, 18 – 20, 22 – 26) apex, and the parameres may not extend to, or slightly extend beyond, the apex of the median lobe. Herman (2001) considered G. plagiatus as a species with a Holarctic distribution. It was recorded for “ Peninsulo Ibérica ” (Gamarra & Outerelo 2008). Ryabukhin (1999) recorded it from the Magadan area (“ Upper Kolyma: environs of Orotukan and 30 km NE of Spornoye ”), but this record requires clarification. The species is here recorded from Cataluña province of Spain, Moldova, Georgia, Uzbekistan, and several regions of Russia (Pskov Area, Stavropol Area, Karachay-Cherkess Republic, Chechen Republic, Sverdlovsk Area, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Region, Krasnoyarsk Territory, Evenkia and Yakutia) for the first time.	en	Shavrin, Alexey V. AF0087D7FFD8FFEEFF48FF4E12E1FA6C.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Anthophagus nigrita was originally described from “ Odenbach ”. Germar (1827) synonymized it with G. plagiatus. Some authors of the 19 th century considered it as a variety (e. g. Heer 1839, Fauvel 1871) or aberration (Luze 1903) of G. plagiatus, or a synonym of G. globulicollis (e. g. Waterhouse 1858). It has been considered as a valid species from the middle of the last century (e. g. Fagel 1958, Lohse 1958, Smetana 1959). Geodromicus nigrita lohsei Jarrige, 1963 was originally described based on the holotype from “ Forêt de Marialle, mousses de la Llipodère, 1700 m ” (France). A study of the holotype did not reveal any external or internal morphological differences suggesting that it should be distinct from G. nigrita. Consequently, G. n. lohsei is synonymyzed with it. Geodromicus niveus Bernhauer, 1941 was originally described based on the holotype from “ Sierra Nevada: Picachode Plakeria … ” (Spain). A study of the holotype and other specimens from Sierra Nevada (Figs. 36 – 37) did not reveal any differences between them and European specimens (Figs. 38 – 39) of G. nigrita. Therefore, G. niveus is synonymized with it. A distribution map for G. nigrita is not provided, since a lot faunistic records can be wrong and many records require clarification, for example those from Scandinavia (e. g. Palm 1961), northeastern Russia (e. g. Poppius 1907). The species has frequently been confused with dark-coloured specimens of G. plagiatus. Notman (1920) recorded it from New York (USA), but this is very likely a result of misidentification. The species is here recorded from Andorra for the first time.	en	Shavrin, Alexey V. AF0087D7FFDEFFEAFF48FF06112AF9BE.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Anthophagus sinuatus was originally described based on six specimens from Sapporo, Hokkaido. The female in better condition is designated as the lectotype in order to fix the identity of the name. Geodromicus watanabei Hayashi, 2018 was recently described from Ishikawa and Nagano prefectures (Hayashi 2018). Based on the morphological features provided in the original description and the shape of the aedeagus (Hayashi 2018: fig. 4) it is conspecific with G. sinuatus, hence the synonymy proposed above. The record of G. sinuatus by Li (1992) from Jilin, China (“ […] Changbai Mountain […] ” [translation from Chinese by L. Tang]) seems doubtful and requires confirmation.
