Bezzi (1922: 120) reported Chiromyza vittata fuscana Wiedemann, 1821 from Puerto Bertoni, Alto Paraná, Paraguay, although he considered the species a variety of Chiromyza vittata Wiedemann, 1820. In his same paper, he reported C. vittata ochracea Wiedemann, 1820 (species above) from the state of São Paulo, Brazil, and described a new variety: C. vittata viridis Bezzi, 1922. Although he considered them all varieties of C. vittata, C. ochracea and C. viridis are currently valid and separated species from C. vittata, but C. fuscana is a synonym of C. ochracea (see James 1973a: 26.2; Woodley 2001: 47–48). Given that, the record presented by Bezzi (1922) for C. vittata fuscana from Paraguay should be assigned to C. ochracea, which then represents the second species of the genus in the country.

The information on the number of specimens in the type series of C. ochracea, that was not given in the original description and stated as “ syntype ♂ ” in Woodley (2001: 47), should be now read as “ two male syntypes ”, of which images of the specimens and labels are given in Pujol-Luz (2020).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/56685175FFED0779109EFC89F178B55A	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Both the male holotype of Cyphomyia lanuginosa Gerstaecker, 1857 (Figs 10–12), housed in the ZMHB collection, currently synonymized with C. gracilicornis Gerstaercker, 1857 (syntypes not examined), and the syntypes of C. imitans Curran, 1925 (Figs 14–16), deposited at the CUIC collection, are conspecific, as the three species have tufts of golden setae over thorax, basal half of wing with veins markedly brown and apical half more yellowish (less brownish or yellowish over the wing membrane), and all tarsomeres whitish. Therefore, we are synonymizing C. imitans with C. gracilicornis.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/56685175FFE90762109EF8FEF0ADB07F	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. In the description of Panacris breviseta Lindner, 1964, only P. tarsalis Gerstaecker, 1857 (Lindner 1964: 8, as Spyridopa) was mentioned. Lindner stated that P. breviseta has smaller ommatidia on the upper half compared to those of P. tarsalis. He did not compare his new species (P. breviseta) with P. nigribasis, a species of the same genus he had described 15 years earlier, from the same locality, also based on a male, not even mentioning it. We examined both holotypes (Figs 17–25) and they are clearly conspecific, therefore we propose P. breviseta syn. nov. of P. nigribasis. They both have all legs completely dark brown and a bicolored wing, in which the basal third has a brownish membrane and veins and the apical two-thirds is yellowish pale. There is a third species, P. funebris James in James et al. 1980, originally described from Peru, based on a female, that might be conspecific with P. nigribasis. From the original description and the key provided by James et al. (1980), P. funebris, as seen in the other two here presented, has all legs dark brown and brownish markings at the base of the wing. However, as it is only known from females, which includes the holotype, is preferable to wait for an examination of the type before formalizing a new synonym.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/56685175FFF10765109EFEE1F022B772	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Pimentel & Pujol-Luz (2001: 18), in their revision of Raphiocerinae, synonymized Dicranophora brevifurca James, 1943 with D. bispinosa (Wiedemann, 1830) (see also Woodley 2011: 406). After examination of the holotype of both species, however, it became clear that both species are distinct (images of one syntype of D. bispinosa: http://daim.snm.ku.dk/digitized-type-collection-details-simple?catno=zmuc00024851). The genus Dicranophora Macquart, 1834 is characterized by the presence of a cylindrical projection, sometimes shorter, as in D. astuta Williston, 1888 (see Pimentel & Pujol-Luz 2001: 22, fig. 76), sometimes longer, as in D. fermuspiculata Godoi & Rafael, 2013 (see Godoi & Rafael 2013: 87, fig. 7), that comes out from the scutellum distal margin and forms a forked process, with the two scutellar spines at its apex. These two species herein examined (D. bispinosa and D. brevifurca), however, have a distinct scutellum shape and size of scutellar spines, clearly not forming a cylindrical base for the two marginal spines and, consequently, the forked process. Therefore, these two species should not be placed in Dicranophora. As well, we examined the holotype of Dicamptocrana jorgenseni Frey, 1934, which was described based on a single male, from the same locality (Villarrica, Paraguay) of Dicranophora brevifurca. Both species, based on males, share the same body coloration pattern and scutellum shape, hence D. brevifurca stat. rev. has its previous position as a synonym of D. bispinosa modified and it is now proposed as a new synonym of Dicamptocrana jorgenseni. It is worth noting that D. bispinosa remains now as the only species of Dicranophora for which the cylindrical projection of the scutellum is absent and it is probable that this species is conspecific with Pezodontina guianae Lindner, 1949a.

We add the first record of the Dicamptocrana jorgenseni from Brazil, based on five males and one female, all labeled as: Brazil, São Paulo, Turmalina, Fazenda São João, 20°00’13”S 50°26’02”W, 08.i.2008, Malaise preta, F.B. Noll leg. (MZUSP). This includes the first female specimen reported of this species, which is the only specimen with smaller scutellum spines, indicating a probable feature that varies between the sexes.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/56685175FFF1076A109EFAF9F683B17B	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Type locality: Paraguay: Santa Trinidad (= Asunción, Santísima Trinidad).

References. James, 1973a: 26.45 (cat., Paraguay not mentioned); Woodley, 2001: 293 (cat.).

Distribution. Argentina, Paraguay (Asunción: Santísima Trinidad [as Santa Trinidad]).

Comments. Lindner (1928a: 100) listed, in the original description, five specimens (three males and two females). Of these five specimens, one female was collected by himself in northern Argentina in X.25 (= October 1925) (this is the SMNS specimen No. 007140, Figs 48–51), labeled as “Type 1927” (by Lindner himself). The other specimens were from Zürcher, who collected larvae from the tree holes of Poinciana regia in Paraguay, and reared them to adults. Although Lindner did not indicate the number of larvae collected, he said that Zürcher reared both sexes, in June (VI) and October (X) of 1914 (these dates are the collecting dates of the larvae). Two of the reared specimens are likely the females deposited in DEI and according to Rolhfien & Ewald (1979: 202), one specimen is labeled “ Paraguay, Sa. Trinidad, I. XII.1914 ”, with additional labels that read “Cotype! 1928” (in Lindner’s handwriting), “Cotypus”, and “ Paratypus ” (both printed labels, added later) (Figs 52–53); and another specimen labeled “ Paraguay, Sa. Trinidad, 9.XI.1914 ”, with additional labels that read “Type! 1928” (this added by Lindner) and “Typus” (this added later) (Figs 55–55). The dates on these two specimens, XII and XI, are very likely the emerging dates of the adults out of the puparia. The only male (of three) we found, deposited in SMNS (Figs 43–47), is labeled as “Cotype 1928” by Lindner. It has a printed label with the month “X” and the last two digits of the year “13”, both handwritten (Fig. 45), indicating that the specimen was collected in X.1913. This male has a second label, entirely in Lindner’s handwriting, that reads “ Paraguay / Sa. Trinidad / X.1911 ” (Fig. 47). Both dates are prior to 1914, which was the year Zürcher collected the larvae (according to Lindner’s publication). It is not clear if this specimen was reared by Zürcher as well, and Lindner did not record all the data correctly, or if this is a specimen Zürcher collected as an adult. It is probable that the correct date is X.1913, as this is the date on Zürcher label and it also matches the period Zürcher was in the Paraguay, from 1913–1915, according to Lindner (1928a: 94, line 8). The fact that Lindner designated a “Type” and a “Cotype” twice (in 1927 and 1928) and deposited them in two different collections, indicated that he was not very diligent with his notes, he also listed this species in his 1929 paper, in the introduction, as “ Rhingiopsis Enderleini nov. spec. ”, although mentions later in the text that the description was published in the previous year. We consider all four specimens as syntypes, and if there are some of the larvae still in the DEI collection, they should also be considered part of the syntype series.

In summary, we examined four specimens of the type series, one male and one female deposited in the SMNS collection, each with a handwritten label added by Lindner himself that reads “Cotype” and “Type”, respectively, and two females (originally one female was stated as male in Woodley 2001: 293) deposited in the DEI collection, each with a handwritten label that reads “Cotype” and “Type” as well. Lindner did not designate a holotype but indiscriminately labeled two female specimens as “Type” (Figs 48–51 and 55–57). In the interest of stabilizing the taxonomic concept of this taxon and because the female specimen from Argentina (Figs 48–51) is the only one Lindner specifically mentioned in his paper, we are designating this female from SMNS as a lectotype, therefore all remaining specimens should be considered paralectotypes. Of the five specimens originally mentioned by Lindner (three males and two females), we have found one male and three females. This discrepancy might be because of Lindner’s superficial note keeping, and he might have been confused about the numbers and sexes of the material he had seen. But it is very likely that there are some more specimens (adults and larvae) in the DEI or in other collections, which might belong to the original syntype series. Woodley (2001: 293), listed seven syntypes, but besides the four here examined, the depository institution of other two males and one female remains unknown, and he could not remember why he included more specimens than Lindner did (Woodley pers. comm.).

Lindner (1928a: 100) described this species from Argentina and Paraguay, but in the Neotropical catalog (James 1973a: 26.45), Paraguay was not included in the distribution of the species, which was later added in the World catalog of the family (Woodley 2001: 293).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/56685175FFC40759109EFE80F078B3BF	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay (Asunción: Santísima Trinidad [as Santa Trinidad]).

Comments. Originally, this species was described in Stratiomyia (= Stratiomys Geoffroy, 1872), but its generic level placement has been in dispute. Not only the placement of Stratiomys convexa Wulp, 1881 has been early questioned (James 1953: 323), but it has also been suggested that some, if not all, Neotropical Stratiomys species should be assigned to other genera (James 1973a: 26.45). In this sense, Pujol-Luz & Papavero (1998), based on additional specimens, proposed Stratiomicrodon for S. convexa, therefore, in a way, accommodating at least one of the Neotropical species into a separate genus from Stratiomys, as suggested by James (1973a). In the World catalog of the family, however, Woodley (2001: 295, 346), synonymized Stratiomicrodon under Stratiomys, but more recently, the genus was revalidated (Pujol-Luz & Pujol-Luz 2014: 406). In spite of the arguments used to support one idea or another, the fact is that Stratiomys badly needs revision. The genus has now nearly 90 described species, which could be difficult to deal with globally, as many species are only known from the type specimen, and even in the small fauna of 10 species of Stratiomys from the Neotropics (including S. convexa) (Woodley 2001: 294), the species are poorly known. This means that we do not know if they are really conspecific with other Stratiomys, and if not, to which genus they might belong. Because the genus is not well understood in the Neotropical Region and that very likely all the species currently placed in the genus are not Stratiomys, as discussed by earlier authors (James 1973a), we prefer to follow Pujol-Luz & Papavero (1998) and Pujol-Luz & Pujol-Luz (2014) and keep at least this species (and likely S. constricta Walker, 1860) apart from Stratiomys, in the genus Stratiomicrodon. Further studies will reveal if the remaining Neotropical species of Stratiomys are Stratiomicrodon as well or should be placed in any other Neotropical genera.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/56685175FFCD075F109EF888F076B053	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
