The former species was based on five collections from Myanmar (G. E. S. Cubitt 226, J. H. Lace 5730, Fig. 1A, C. B. Smales s.n. and H. Collett 620) and China (A. Henry 10939, Fig. 1B), and the latter was based on two gatherings (B. Balansa 2238, 2239, Fig. 1C–D) from Tonkin, Vietnam. In the protologues, both species were placed by Dunn (1912) close to each other within the Sect. Otosema (Bentham 1852: 248) Taubert (1894: 271), but the key to species (Dunn 1912: 142) indicated that they can be distinguished by features of the stipules, i.e. persistent in M. setigera and caducous in M. cubittii. In the Latin description, however, no significant differences were found in the description of the stipules: “stipulae lineares, persistentes” in M. cubittii and “stipulae aciculares, 4–5 mm longae, persistentes” in M. setigera (Dunn 1912). Lôc & Vidal (2001) also considered that both species are different in the length and growth pattern of the stipules, and described M. setigera with 6–8 mm long stipules in a brush-like pattern at the top of branches and M. cubittii with 2–3 mm long stipules not forming a brush. But in many references, M. cubittii was described also with about 8 mm long and persistent stipules (Wei 1994, Sun 2006, Wei & Pedley 2010). In fact, a fruiting type specimen of M. cubittii was clearly shown to have 6–8 mm long and persistent stipules (Fig. 1B), which is very similar to the stipules in a fruiting type specimen of M. setigera (Fig. 1D). Based on the examination of literature and specimens as well as field observations, we concluded that M. cubittii and M. setigera represent the same species. We adopt M. cubittii as the correct name of the species due to its broader use (e.g. about 2120 results for “ Millettia cubittii ” while about 141 for “ Millettia setigera ” in google search). This species is characterised by its tree habit, evident leaf scars, persistent stipules (often in brush-like form at the top of branches during the fruiting period), stipellate leaflets, up to 2 cm long brachyblasts in the lower part of inflorescences, up to 2.0– 2.5 cm long flowers, a standard with two basal callosities, and brown hairy pods (Fig. 2).

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/097A87BCFFEDFF8C2C8DFF56FB2BFBF3	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Thorel 3120, F. J. Harmand 357 and L. Lôc & Vidal (2001) indicated Thorel 3102 (not 3120) from P as the lectotype, but this lectotypification was made after 1 January 2001 and did not use the phrase “designated here” or an equivalent. Thus, the lectotypification by Lôc & Vidal (2001) was not effective according to the Art. 7.11 (Turland et al. 2018). We traced two specimens of Thorel 3102 in P, and designate the specimen (P02141802) as the second-step lectotype of M. erythrocalyx. In addition, in the protologue of M. verruculosa Gagnepain (1913) just cited a single gathering (F. J. Harmand 1111). Lôc & Vidal (2001) indicated that Harmand 1111 (P) is its “ holotype ”, but this typification was not effective (see Art. 7.11). There are two specimens of this collection in P (as syntypes according to Art. 40.2 Ex. 3), and we designate one of them (P02141798) as the lectotype of M. verruculosa due to its better conserved status.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/097A87BCFFECFF8D2C8DFA0DFAB5F78C	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. (lectotype designated here: K000848707!).

Millettia pachyloba was first described by Drake (1891) with citation of four gatherings collected by B. Balansa (2305– 2308) in Tonkin, Vietnam, of which Balansa 2306 was indicated by Dunn (1912) as its type [first-step lectotype] without specifying a herbarium. Lôc & Vidal (2001) designated the specimen in P as type, but this typification was not effective according to Art. 7.11 (Turland et al. 2018). We designate the specimen (P 02141840) as the second-step lectotype of the name. Four collections were cited by Gagnepain (1913) in the protologue of M. spireana, namely, C. Thorel 2442, C. J. Spire 47 (actually 447), 349 and F. J. Harmand s.n., of which Thorel 2442 (lecto, cf. Craib 1928, P!) was indicated by Lôc & Vidal (2001) as its type. But we found that Craib (1928) did not clearly indicate the type of the name, and the lectotypification by Lôc & Vidal (2001) is not effective according to the Art. 7.11 (Turland et al. 2018). We designate the specimen of Thorel 2442 (K000848784) with a much better conserved status as the lectotype of M. spireana. In the protologue of M. obovata, a single collection (Herb. Hong-kong 371A) was provided by Gagnepain (1913). S. Coll. 371A (holo-, HK) was indicated by Lôc & Vidal (2001) as type, but this typification was not effective according to Art. 7.11 (also see Art. 40.2 Ex. 3, Turland et al. 2018). We did not find the specimen in HK, but traced three specimens of this gathering in P. We designate the specimen (P 02141842) with two dissected flowers as the lectotype of M. obovata. For the name Derris lasiopetala, the protologue provided a detailed description and its vouchers (“Hab. Hainan, leg. N. Konishi, 1909, Juli”, Hayata 1913). Lôc & Vidal (2001) gave the type information of D. lasiopetala [“Type: Konishi s.n. (juill. 1909), Chine. Hainan (lecto-, cf. Hayata 1913, non vu)”]. According to Taxonomic Literature II (https://www.sil.si.edu/DigitalCollections/tl-2/), the types used by Hayata are mainly kept in the herbarium TI, and further material are kept in A, C, K, and P. Millettia penduliformis Gagnepain (1916b: 200).

Type: — LAOS. plateau d’Attopeu, 500 m, March 1877, F. J. Harmand 1408 (lectotype: P02141845 image!, designated by Lôc & Vidal 2001: 146; isolectotypes: P02141846 image!, P02141847 image!); VIETNAM. Pho-qua, dans la prov. de Bien-hoa, March 1877, L. Pierre s.n. (remaining syntype: P02753872 image!).

Millettia penduliformis was originally described on the basis of two flowering collections, i.e. F. J. Harmand 1408 from Laos (Fig. 4A) and L. Pierre s.n. (Fig. 4B) from Vietnam (Gagnepain 1916b). In the protologue, the author considered that the species can be distinguished from M. pendula Benth. ex Baker (1876: 105) by its larger and acute leaflets, caducous stipules, elongated inflorescences, a standard petal without basal callosities and auricles, and a single ovule. Millettia pendula is a superfluous and illegitimate name because M. leucantha Kurz (1873: 68) was cited as its synonym when published (Art. 52.2 of ICN, Turland et al. 2018). Recently, M. leucantha was transferred to the genus Imbralyx with unique characters within Millettieae, which is quite different from the genus Millettia (Song 2021).

Our examination of literature and specimens showed that M. penduliformis may be conspecific with M. pachyloba, because both share very similar morphological features. But it may be reasonable to conduct more investigations before this is formalised. In Flore générale de l’Indo-Chine (Gagnepain 1916a), M. pachyloba was placed in the section IV with diadelphous stamens, and M. penduliformis was placed in section VI with monadelphous stamens. However, Mattapha (2020) clearly described M. penduliformis with diadelphous stamens. The shape of the pods and number of ovules per ovary were also used to identify M. pachyloba and M. penduliformis (Mattapha 2020: 3–6 vs. 1–2 ovules, cylindrical vs. subglobose pods; Lôc & Vidal 2001: 4–6 vs. 1 (–2) ovules, ellipsoid or subcylindrical vs. elliptical pods). But Hô (1999) pointed out that M. penduliformis has 3-seeded pods. In fact, the pod of M. pachyloba also bears subglobose pods with one seed, as shown in its syntype (Fig. 4D). Many authors described M. pachyloba with 1–4 seeds per fruit (Wei 1994, Li et al. 2001, Sun 2006, Wu et al. 2006, Wei & Pedley 2010). Mattapha (2020) also provided several other differences between M. pachyloba and M. penduliformis in their descriptions, such as shape of the leaflet apex (obtuse, sometimes with apiculate tip ca 2 mm long vs. acute), number of lateral veins (10–15 vs. 13–24 pairs), and length of the stipels (5–9 vs. ca 3 mm). But these features are inconsistent with those reported in Lôc & Vidal (2001), who indicated no significant differences in these aspects (abruptly acuminate, mucronate or obtuse vs. abruptly and shortly acuminate, mucronate or obtuse, 9–15 vs. 10–17 pairs, and 3 vs. 3 mm). Our examination of the type specimens (Fig. 4C–D of M. pachyloba, Fig. 4A–B of M. penduliformis) also suggested no significant differences between them (acuminate to obtuse vs. acuminate or shortly acuminate, 13–20 vs. 11–17 pairs, and 1.7–2.6 vs. 1.6–2.3 mm). Until to now, we just observed that they are markedly different in the size of the flowers (14–17 mm long for M. pachyloba vs. 7–10 mm long for M. penduliformis). We are not sure whether it is resulted from the unopened flowers of specimens of the latter species, as the mature material is not available to us.

In addition, some studies indicated that the two species have a standard petal with two basal callosities (Dunn 1912, Lôc & Vidal 2001, Mattapha 2020), but this is inconsistent with the descriptions by other authors (e.g. Gagnepain 1916a, Sun 2006, Wei & Pedley 2010) who described them with no callosities. Based on living material, we also did not observe basal callosities for M. pachyloba (living material of M. penduliformis was not available to us). Morphologically, M. penduliformis and M. pachyloba are very similar to M. rubiginosa Wight & Arnott (1834: 263); they share a unique combination of characters, including woody climbers, stipellate leaflets with non-silvery lower surfaces, distinct brachyblasts, a standard with sericeous hairs outside, wings with two patches of golden hairs, diadelphous stamens, and tomentose pods. But the two former species have rather inflated (vs. compressed) mature pods and a different distribution. M. penduliformis and M. pachyloba are distributed in China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, while M. rubiginosa is endmic to South India.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/097A87BCFFEFFF802C8DF896FCDDFA5B	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Dunn (1912) and Adema (2000) indicated Kurz 1778 as the type of M. pubinervis, but they did not specify a herbarium. We traced three duplicates of this collection, all of which should be considered as syntypes (see Art. 7.11 and Art. 40 Ex. 3, Turland et al. 2018). One of them (K000848733) is designated here as the lectotype of M. pubinervis. The protologue of M. decipiens listed three collectors (Scortechini, Wray, Ridley) without citing collecting numbers (Prain 1897). Subsequently, Scortechini 1749 (without a herbarium) was indicated by Dunn (1912) as type. But Adema (2000) provided different type information for M. decipiens [“Type: Scortechini 1747 (holo K; iso A, K)”]. We checked the two collections and found that all five sheets of Scortechini 1749 [BM, CAL (2), K (2)] and two of Scortechini 1747 (A00073552, K000848759) belong to M. decipiens, but another of Scortechini 1747 (E00203612) represents M. sericea. We designated the specimen (Scortechini 1749, K000848760) as the second-step lectotype of M. decipiens (see Art. 9.17 Ex. 14). For the name Pongamia dehiscens, Koorders & Valeton (1895) published it based on material collected by S. H. Koorders. Adema (2000) designated Koorders 4105 (L) as the lectotype of P. dehiscens. In the herbarium L, there are thee duplicates of this gathering, all of which should be syntypes (see Art. 40.2 Ex. 3). We designate one of them (L0064654) as the second-step lectotype of P. dehiscens. The original material of the name Millettia hemsleyana includes two gatherings, viz. Wray 3310, 3608 (Prain 1897), of which the former was indicated by Dunn (1912) as type. Lôc & Vidal (2001) designated Wray 3310 (K) as lectotype. There are two duplicates of Wray 3310 in the herbarium K, and we designate one of them (K000848757) as the second-step lectotype of M. hemsleyana. The protologue of M. nana just cited Pierre 1020 (Gagnepain 1913). Lôc & Vidal (2001) indicated Pierre 1020 (holo- P) as type, but there are five duplicates of the collection in P, all of which are syntypes of M. nana. The specimen (Pierre 1020, P 02141875) with a drawing of a dissected flower is designated here as the lectotype of M. nana. We found that the original material of M. fallax includes at least four specimens of A. F. G. Kerr 3163 [BM, K (2), TCD]. Lôc & Vidal (2001) provided the type information [“Type: Kerr 3163, Thaïlande (holo-, K!)”], but this typification was not effective (see Art. 7.11, Art. 9.10 Ex. 11, and Art. 40.2 Ex. 3). F. Bon 4871, Fig. 5: A). This is a poorly known species. The species is known only from the type locality, and its fruit information is still not provided in any literature. Lôc & Vidal (2001) stated that this species was also found in one locality in Thailand, but did not provide any voucher information. In Flora of Thailand, Mattapha (2020) recorded 27 species of Millettia, but did not include this species. We did not find any other specimens of the species except for four sheets of type specimens from Vietnam. In the protologue, Gagnepain (1913) described the species with terminal and axillary inflorescences, although he was not sure about its growth habit (“Arbor vel frutex scandens?”). Both Millettia and Derris Loureiro (1790: 432) contain trees and climbers, but Millettia species usually bear axillary inflorecences (Song et al. 2021), while many species of Derris are often recorded with terminal inflorecences (Chen & Pedley 2010, Sirichamorn et al. 2012). Millettia boniana was also described with slender branches bearing whitish lenticels, estipellate leaflets, whitish flowers, glabrous petals, a standard petal without basal callosities and auricles, biauriculate wings, and fewer ovules per ovary (Gagnepain 1913). In these characters, M. boniana is also very similar to some species of the genus Derris such as D. tonkinensis.

Specially, in the discussions of Millettia boniana, Gagnepain (1913) pointed out that the collector (H. F. Bon) of its type specimens wrote Derris on the label. Furthermore, we found that a flowering syntype of Derris tonkinensis, collected by H. F. Bon (3347, Fig. 5C) from Tonkin, Vietnam, is strikingly similar to the type specimens of M. boniana in morphology. In addition, a fruiting specimen that was collected by H. F. Bon (3381, Fig. 5D) is consistent with M. boniana in appearance, but it has indehiscent, thin and winged pods and belongs to D. tonkinensis. Millettia and Derris are very similar in morphological characters, especially when lacking fruiting material, and this has caused transfer of some species names between the two genera (Merrill 1910, How 1954, Song et al. 2017a, Song & Pan 2022). In fact, the lectotype (B. Balansa 1189, Fig. 5B) and isolectotypes of D. tonkinensis were recorded by Drake (1891: 188) as Millettia sp. Based on these analyses, M. boniana is proposed here as a new synonym of D. tonkinensis.

In addition, in the protologue of M. boniana Gagnepain (1913) just cited Bon 4871, but did not specify the holotype. Lôc & Vidal (2001) provided the type information of M. boniana [“Type: Bon 4871, Viȇtnam, Nam Ha, Vo Xa, sept. 1891, fl. (holo-, P!; iso-, P!)”], which means presence of more than one duplicates of this gathering and all of them should be considered as syntypes (see Art. 7.11 Ex. 12 and Art. 40 Ex. 3, Turland et al. 2018). We traced four duplicates of this collection in P, of which three labelled “TYPE” and the fourth labelled “ISOTYPE”. We designate one of them (P00700373) with “TYPE” as the lectotype of M. boniana.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/097A87BCFFE3FF842C8DF99EFC5DFC3E	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. But Lock & Heald (1994) and Lôc & Vidal (2001) did not include it in the flora of Vietnam, and we also did not find any specimens from Vietnam. In addition, Pérez (2014) conducted a phytochemical and biological evaluation of this species based on the samples from Nui Chua National Park, Vietnam, but we found that it is the misidentification of the species of Antheroporum Gagnepain (1915: 180) according to Fig. 3.1 provided by Pérez (2014: 126). Thus, this species may be excluded from the flora of Vietnam. In addition, the protologue of M. caerulea provided two localities and two collectors (“Ava, at Phanoe, Wallich; Malacca, Maingay ”). Dunn (1912) cited “Lower Burma: ‘Hill at Phanoe, 10.5.1827. Robinia ? caerulea, Wall. Cat. 5894’ (type)”, but did not specify a herbarium. There are more than one duplicates of Wallich Cat. 5894, one of which (K 000848730) is designated here as the second-step lectotype of the name.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/097A87BCFFE4FF852C8DFACBFBEEF954	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. We did not find any specimens except for the five type specimens from Cambodia. Thus, it was excluded here from the flora of Vietnam. It is a very poorly known species and is characterised by its tree habit, the presence of stipels, 7 leaflets per leaf, leaflets and flowers becoming black when dry, distinct brachyblasts bearing 2–5 flowers, and a standard with basal callosities.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/097A87BCFFE4FF852C8DF93DFDD7F7B8	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
