The genus includes 4–7 mm long, subcylindrical species with comparatively long, slender rostrum, conical pygidium, and two types of spines on the tibial apex. While most baridines have a single spine that extends ventrally from the inner flange, the spine is more medially or even dorsally extended in Anthobaris and a few other genera. This modification is almost always accompanied by an acute extension of the now “vacant” ventrodistal angle of the tibia. In Anthobaris, this additional spine is triangular and comparable to that of Dolichobaris opaciceps Champion, 1909, a similarly slender but much smaller species. This is the primitive condition of the premucro of Kuschel (1952), who introduced the term for species with the spine located more proximal (i.e., preapical) and no longer forming the somatic ventrodistal apex of the tibia. Examples for species with long apical premucrones are Stenobaris avicenniae Linell, 1897, female Microrhinus Chevrolat, 1881, and female Labiaticola Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal, 1999. Some other baridines with a long, tapered pygidium such as in Anthobaris occur in Madarini but have stridulatory systems with plectra on tergite VII, which are absent in Anthobaris and Baridini in general.

Natural history. I collected two female A. rugosicollis from an unidentified species of Smallanthus Mackenzie (Compositae). Vitali et al. (2015) recognized 23 species in this genus, with a range that agrees well with the presently known distribution of Anthobaris. The tubers of one species, the “yacón”, are of major interest as sugar substitute and food while several others have local relevance. Even so, these weevils never received attention in the economic literature. They may not be confined to this one plant genus or the observed association might have been incidental.

Notes. The name must not be confused with Anthinobaris Morimoto & Yoshihara, 1996. The Ancient Greek root word ἄνθος (flower) is used as a noun in one case and as an adjective in the other.

https://treatment.plazi.org/id/03E287F6DC464B359DBEA3AFFA16FBDF	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Specimens of A. affabra are glabrous and lack the conspicuous setation of the other two species. Other morphological details with diagnostic value are the prominent subapical callosity on the elytron and the ventrodistally unmodified fifth tarsomere.

Notes. Centrinus affaber was indexed without page number in Hustache (1938) but did not appear in the catalogue itself. Because of the confusion with B. affaber, the name has never been transferred formally to Anthobaris. The type specimen for C. affaber, an almost black, probably greasy female from the State of Minas Gerais (Fig. 1), agrees morphologically with bluish specimens from the southerly adjacent state. Hustache probably had seen the type in preparation of the Junk Catalogue but did not associate the name with the bluish specimens described as A. denticulata. My well-preserved specimen from Cipó (Fig. 3) shows the natural metallic luster of this species. I have seen only females. Baridius affaber is removed here from Anthobaris and transferred to Baridinae incertae sedis.

Material examined. BRAZIL. Minas Gerais State, without collecting site, [C.H. Anthobaris rugosicollis and A. comptior can be distinguished from A. affabra by erect setae, undeveloped elytral callosity, and ventrodistally acuminate fifth tarsomere. Anthobaris rugosicollis is smaller than A. comptior (3.9–5.6 mm vs. 6.9 mm), has the sutural interstriae raised and some white setae on elytral base and pronotum. The color is blackish with slight brazen sheen while A. comptior has a brassy tinge. The penis (this is the only species with known males) has basally fused apodemes, a long flagellum, and a tegmen with wide basal apodeme (Fig. 7).

Notes. Anthobaris rugosicollis is the type species for Anthobaris by original designation. The type status of the specimen in MACN (Bachmann & Lanteri 2013) remains doubtful as long as it cannot be demonstrated that it was among the material submitted to Hustache.
