03AD41144E5D751AB082796442A1FCAB.taxon	etymology	Etymology. The genus name is a combination of “ Tropical ”, referring to the distribution of all four species, and “ cosa ”, a common ending of lycosid genera.	en	Paredes-Munguía, Williams, Brescovit, Antonio D., Teixeira, Renato A. (2023): Tidying things up: Tropicosa, a new Neotropical wolf spider genus (Araneae: Lycosidae: Lycosinae). Zootaxa 5228 (4): 351-393, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.5228.4.1
03AD41144E5D751AB082796442A1FCAB.taxon	discussion	Justification and putative synapomophies. The Alopecosa moesta lineage emerged clearly as a different grouping, distant from Nearctic Alopecosa (Piacentini & Ramirez 2019). The laminar median apophysis, curved ventral process, the visible well sclerotized tegular lobe in males (Figs 5 b, 12 c, 19 h) and the expanded anterior part of median septum in females (Figs 1 a, 22 f) will be treated here as synapomorphies. These characters, observed in two Neotropical lycosids (Schizocosa chelifasciata and Lycosa thorelli) and in a new species, justifies their grouping.	en	Paredes-Munguía, Williams, Brescovit, Antonio D., Teixeira, Renato A. (2023): Tidying things up: Tropicosa, a new Neotropical wolf spider genus (Araneae: Lycosidae: Lycosinae). Zootaxa 5228 (4): 351-393, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.5228.4.1
03AD41144E5D751AB082796442A1FCAB.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Tropicosa gen. nov. can be recognized by the following combination of characters: males with tegular lobe spoon-shaped and strongly sclerotized (Figs 5 b, 19 a, 28 b), and median apophysis laminar and curved, with ventral process of the median apophysis tapered (Figs 5 d, 11 d, 25 b). Females differ from other lycosine genera by the anteriorly expanded median septum (Figs 1 a, 16 a), and wide, triangular hoods (Figs 21 a, 22 a). Both sexes have a longitudinal dark stripe on the sternum (Figs 9 e, 23 e, 26 e) and a single longitudinal dark stripe on each chelicera (Figs 6 b, 20 b). Compared to other Neotropical lycosids, this combination of characters is unique. Considering the shape and size of the terminal apophysis, species of Tropicosa resemble species of Pavocosa Roewer, 1960 or Hogna Simon, 1885. However, both genera have a small tegular lobe with a short membrane at its apex, and Pavocosa possesses a straight ventral process of median apophysis, slightly curved in Hogna. Under field conditions, species of Tropicosa are recognizable by the carapace dark-brown and longitudinal dark stripes on each chelicera.	en	Paredes-Munguía, Williams, Brescovit, Antonio D., Teixeira, Renato A. 03AD41144E5D751AB082796442A1FCAB.taxon	description	Description. Small wolf spiders, females larger than males (females 8.00 – 14.67; males 6.33 – 12.78). Carapace brown, both median and submarginal bands yellow (Figs 6 a, 20 a, 26 a). A fusiform dark longitudinal stripe in the sternum is present in both sexes (Figs 8 f, 26 e). First row of eyes equal and slightly procurved, shorter than the second, AME slightly larger than ALE. A black ocular area covered by a group of short white setae (Figs 6 d, 17 b). Carapace piriform, relatively wider in females than in males. Chelicerae with three teeth in the retromargin of the fang furrow, decreasing in size from the distal to basal teeth; promargin with three teeth, the median the bigger. Chelicerae creamy with a single longitudinal dark stripe continued from clypeus, conspicuous in fresh specimens of T. thorelli comb. nov. (Fig. 23 b), but not so much in T. chelifasciata comb. nov. (Fig. 13 b). Cardiac mark lanceolate and surrounded by parallel yellow bands (Figs 6 a, 13 a, 17 a). Leg lengths IV> I> II> III, femora darker than tarsi. Male palp has a visible, rounded membranous palea, partially sclerotized (Figs 19 b, 25 a). Tegular lobe is conspicuously strong and spoon-shaped (Figs 12 b, 28 e). A dorsal channel in the median apophysis is visible in apical view and in the expanded bulb (Figs 12 a, 19 h). The median apophysis is laminar, with the ventral projection strong and curved (Figs 5 a, 25 a, 28 g). Median apophysis oriented transversally to the cymbium; embolus slender and passing through the dorsal channel of median apophysis (Figs 4 g, 10 d, 11 e). A counterclockwise hyaline terminal apophysis, tapering in the left male palp (Figs 12 b, 25 b). Epigyne T-shaped, with median septum expanded anteriorly twice or thrice its narrowest part (Figs 1 a, 7 d, 16 a). Transversal septum could be as wide as the expanded part of median septum, as in Tropicosa thorelli comb. nov. (Figs 22 a, 27 b), or narrow as in T. chelifasciata comb. nov. (Fig. 8 a). Likewise, transversal septum height could be high or low, but is always straight (Figs 7 a, 22 e). Hoods are triangular, parallel, and deep, as wide as the median septum in its expanded part (Figs 1 b, 16 a, 21 b). Head of spermatheca rounded (Fig. 8 c) or triangular (Fig. 27 d) in dorsal view, spermatheca stalk thinner than the head; vulval chamber absent (Figs 2 b, 22 b).	en	Paredes-Munguía, Williams, Brescovit, Antonio D., Teixeira, Renato A. 03AD41144E557509B0827A84435EF957.taxon	discussion	Remarks. The holotype of Lycosa chelifasciata was reported as lost by Silva-Moreira et al. (2010) but was subsequently located and examined by ADB, and ultimately destroyed in the 2018 fire at the MNRJ. The type specimens of Lycosa langei were sent as a loan to, and examined by ADB, but they were destroyed in the 2010 fire at the IBSP. We were also able to examine several specimens deposited at the MHNCI (numbers 1371 – 1377) and identified as L. langei, all of them collected from the type locality by the same collector of the types. We compared these specimens with the original description of L. langei and found no significant differences. Comparison of specimens of Lycosa chelifasciata and Lycosa langei showed no significant differences, justifying the synonymy proposed herein. Other material examined. 03AD41144E4C750EB0827DEE4545F8B7.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Holmberg (1876) proposed Lycosa (Tarantula) maesta for the first time based only on the 16 mm total length of the specimen he examined. Though superficial, this species description was sufficient to make the species description a valid nomenclatural act (see ICZN 1999: art. 6). Holmberg (1881) transfers this species to Tarentula and redescribed it based on a set of approximately 200 specimens collected by Lynch Arribálzaga at the surroundings of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He also clarified (in Holmberg, 1881) that the specimen used to propose Lycosa moesta was pinned, although no type was assigned. This is corroborated by the statement made by Levi (1964): “ … Holmberg’s species, mostly from the Buenos Aires vicinity, there exist no types ”. Simon (1885) placed Lycosa moesta within an arbitrary Alopecosa group, which was posteriorly transferred to the genus Alopecosa by Petrunkevitch (1911). After examining Argentinian, Peruvian, Brazilian, and Uruguayan specimens we concluded that are conspecific with the specimens described by Holmberg (1881) but does not fit the Alopecosa diagnosis (see Lugetti & Tongiorgi 1969; Dondale & Redner 1979). 03AD41144E44753FB0827F2044BDFE99.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Keyserling’s illustration of the female genitalia of T. bogotensis was apparently based on a subadult specimen, as it shows a typical flat, pre-epigynal plate (Keyserling, 1877: fig 31). The two holes at the base of the pre-epigyne do not look like copulatory openings, but the primordium of a transversal septum. Colombian subadult specimens and fresh material from Bogota were compared with the Keyserling’s description, which led us to conclude that both sexes match morphologically with Tarentula bogotensis. In addition, the male median apophysis possesses a deep dorsal curved concavity and a pronounced tegular lobe, and the curvature of the median apophysis is clearly visible in retrolateral view. Likewise, the anterior expansion of median septum in adult females shows no difference with T. thorelli from Keyserling (1891: fig. 194 b). Moreover, the syntype specimen of T. bogotensis, examined by photos, and compared to the original drawings and somatic description (Keyserling 1877) showed it should be treated as a junior synonym of T. thorellii (Keyserling, 1877).
