Tropicosa gen. nov.

Type species. Lycosa moesta Holmberg, 1876

Etymology. The genus name is a combination of “Tropical”, referring to the distribution of all four species, and “cosa”, a common ending of lycosid genera.

Justification and putative synapomophies. The Alopecosa moesta lineage emerged clearly as a different grouping, distant from Nearctic Alopecosa (Piacentini & Ramirez 2019) . The laminar median apophysis, curved ventral process, the visible well sclerotized tegular lobe in males (Figs 5b, 12c, 19h) and the expanded anterior part of median septum in females (Figs 1a, 22f) will be treated here as synapomorphies. These characters, observed in two Neotropical lycosids ( Schizocosa chelifasciata and Lycosa thorelli ) and in a new species, justifies their grouping.

Diagnosis. Tropicosa gen. nov. can be recognized by the following combination of characters: males with tegular lobe spoon-shaped and strongly sclerotized (Figs 5b, 19a, 28b), and median apophysis laminar and curved, with ventral process of the median apophysis tapered (Figs 5d, 11d, 25b). Females differ from other lycosine genera by the anteriorly expanded median septum (Figs 1a, 16a), and wide, triangular hoods (Figs 21a, 22a). Both sexes have a longitudinal dark stripe on the sternum (Figs 9e, 23e, 26e) and a single longitudinal dark stripe on each chelicera (Figs 6b, 20b).

Compared to other Neotropical lycosids, this combination of characters is unique. Considering the shape and size of the terminal apophysis, species of Tropicosa resemble species of Pavocosa Roewer, 1960 or Hogna Simon, 1885 . However, both genera have a small tegular lobe with a short membrane at its apex, and Pavocosa possesses a straight ventral process of median apophysis, slightly curved in Hogna . Under field conditions, species of Tropicosa are recognizable by the carapace dark-brown and longitudinal dark stripes on each chelicera.

Description. Small wolf spiders, females larger than males (females 8.00–14.67; males 6.33–12.78). Carapace brown, both median and submarginal bands yellow (Figs 6a, 20a, 26a). A fusiform dark longitudinal stripe in the sternum is present in both sexes (Figs 8f, 26e). First row of eyes equal and slightly procurved, shorter than the second, AME slightly larger than ALE. A black ocular area covered by a group of short white setae (Figs 6d, 17b). Carapace piriform, relatively wider in females than in males. Chelicerae with three teeth in the retromargin of the fang furrow, decreasing in size from the distal to basal teeth; promargin with three teeth, the median the bigger. Chelicerae creamy with a single longitudinal dark stripe continued from clypeus, conspicuous in fresh specimens of T. thorelli comb. nov. (Fig. 23b), but not so much in T. chelifasciata comb. nov. (Fig. 13b). Cardiac mark lanceolate and surrounded by parallel yellow bands (Figs 6a, 13a, 17a). Leg lengths IV>I>II>III, femora darker than tarsi. Male palp has a visible, rounded membranous palea, partially sclerotized (Figs 19b, 25a). Tegular lobe is conspicuously strong and spoon-shaped (Figs 12b, 28e). A dorsal channel in the median apophysis is visible in apical view and in the expanded bulb (Figs 12a, 19h). The median apophysis is laminar, with the ventral projection strong and curved (Figs 5a, 25a, 28g). Median apophysis oriented transversally to the cymbium; embolus slender and passing through the dorsal channel of median apophysis (Figs 4g, 10d, 11e). A counterclockwise hyaline terminal apophysis, tapering in the left male palp (Figs 12b, 25b). Epigyne T-shaped, with median septum expanded anteriorly twice or thrice its narrowest part (Figs 1a, 7d, 16a). Transversal septum could be as wide as the expanded part of median septum, as in Tropicosa thorelli comb. nov. (Figs 22a, 27b), or narrow as in T. chelifasciata comb. nov. (Fig. 8a). Likewise, transversal septum height could be high or low, but is always straight (Figs 7a, 22e). Hoods are triangular, parallel, and deep, as wide as the median septum in its expanded part (Figs 1b, 16a, 21b). Head of spermatheca rounded (Fig. 8c) or triangular (Fig. 27d) in dorsal view, spermatheca stalk thinner than the head; vulval chamber absent (Figs 2b, 22b).

Species composition. Four species, Tropicosa baguala sp. nov. , T. moesta comb. nov. , T. thorelli comb. nov. and T. chelifasciata comb. nov.

Distribution. From north and central Colombian Andean region (Santander, Boyacá, Cundinamarca) to the northeastern (Salta, Santiago del Estero) and central Argentina (Santa Fé, Buenos Aires).

We were also able to examine several specimens deposited at the MHNCI (numbers 1371–1377) and identified as L. langei , all of them collected from the type locality by the same collector of the types. We compared these specimens with the original description of L. langei and found no significant differences. Comparison of specimens of Lycosa chelifasciata and Lycosa langei showed no significant differences, justifying the synonymy proposed herein.

Remarks. Holmberg (1876) proposed Lycosa (Tarantula) maesta for the first time based only on the 16 mm total length of the specimen he examined. Though superficial, this species description was sufficient to make the species description a valid nomenclatural act (see ICZN 1999: art. 6). Holmberg (1881) transfers this species to Tarentula and redescribed it based on a set of approximately 200 specimens collected by Lynch Arribálzaga at the surroundings of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He also clarified (in Holmberg, 1881) that the specimen used to propose Lycosa moesta was pinned, although no type was assigned. This is corroborated by the statement made by Levi (1964): “…Holmberg’s species, mostly from the Buenos Aires vicinity, there exist no types ”. Simon (1885) placed Lycosa moesta within an arbitrary Alopecosa group, which was posteriorly transferred to the genus Alopecosa by Petrunkevitch (1911). After examining Argentinian, Peruvian, Brazilian, and Uruguayan specimens we concluded that are conspecific with the specimens described by Holmberg (1881) but does not fit the Alopecosa diagnosis (see Lugetti & Tongiorgi 1969; Dondale & Redner 1979).

Remarks. Keyserling’s illustration of the female genitalia of T. bogotensis was apparently based on a subadult specimen, as it shows a typical flat, pre-epigynal plate (Keyserling, 1877: fig 31). The two holes at the base of the pre-epigyne do not look like copulatory openings, but the primordium of a transversal septum. Colombian subadult specimens and fresh material from Bogota were compared with the Keyserling’s description, which led us to conclude that both sexes match morphologically with Tarentula bogotensis . In addition, the male median apophysis possesses a deep dorsal curved concavity and a pronounced tegular lobe, and the curvature of the median apophysis is clearly visible in retrolateral view. Likewise, the anterior expansion of median septum in adult females shows no difference with T. thorelli from Keyserling (1891: fig. 194b). Moreover, the syntype specimen of T. bogotensis , examined by photos, and compared to the original drawings and somatic description (Keyserling 1877) showed it should be treated as a junior synonym of T. thorellii (Keyserling, 1877) .

Diagnosis: Males of Tropicosa thorelli can be recognized by the perpendicular angle of the ventral process in reference to the median apophysis (Figs 24c, 25b) clearly visible in prolateral view when compared to Tropicosa baguala . Females of Tropicosa thorelli can be recognized by the length of the transversal septum equal to the widest part of the median septum (Figs 21e, 22a) and by the narrowest constriction of the median septum among all species in the genus (Fig. 22b).

Description. Male (ICN-Ar 12813). Color in ethanol (Figs 26a–f): Prosoma dorsal shield dark brown covered by short black bristles except on longitudinal median band and submarginal band. Both longitudinal median and submarginal bands are straight, equally broad, and yellow. A marginal row of white setae uniformly distributed on cephalothorax (Fig. 26a). Sparse black bristles in the ocular area covered with white bristles. Four long black bristles on the clypeal condyle anterior to anterior eye row. One large black bristle between the AME. First row of eyes procurved, slightly shorter than the second row; AME larger than the ALE; PME separated by a shorter length as their radii (Fig. 26b). Chelicerae with three retromarginal teeth decreasing in size from basal to distal; promargin with three teeth, the median bigger (Fig. 26d). Chelicerae creamy each with a fuzzy longitudinal brown stripe covered frontally with long brown hairs. Chillum brown sclerotized and divided. Basal condyle present and clearer than the chelicerae. Sternum longer than wide, light brown covered by short black bristles in the marginal area; a transverse dark brown band is present (Fig. 26e); endites creamy and convergent; labium square shaped darker than the endites; both endites and labium yellowish in their distal portion. Legs: All segments of legs creamy with two dorsal wavy stripes on femora. Opisthosoma background olive dispersed black bristles covering mainly on dorsal part; heart mark present; a group of strong white and black bristles on dorsal proximal part near cephalothorax (Figs 26a, 26b). Parallel whitish bands on both sides of the heart mark. Venter orangish sparsely covered by tiny black bristles and white bristles distributed on both lateral sides; spinnerets orange; both anterior and posterior spinnerets cylindrical (Fig. 26e).

Palp tibiae cylindrical slightly wider apically. Cymbium piriform, stridulatory organ present (Fig. 26f). Subtegulum rounded shape; tegulum sclerotized with a curved sperm duct. Ventral process triangular and bigger than median apophysis (Figs 24d, 25 ba, 25b). Tegular lobe sclerotized with a membranous inner portion. Terminal apophysis beak-shape curved and oriented counterclockwise (Fig. 25b). Subterminal apophysis present and membranous (Fig. 25b). Palea half sclerotized with no protuberances (Figs 24a, 25e). Embolus slender and curved, pars pendula present (Fig. 25c).
