Acridium (Diponthus) nigroconspersum
Stål, 1861 [1860]: 327 (Holotype, female, Uruguay, Montevideo, NHRS Stockholm).

Diponthus nigroconspersus: Walker, 1870: 637 ; Pictet and Saussure, 1887: 374; Bruner, 1900: 65; Kirby, 1910: 382; Liebermann, 1939: 187; Dirsh, 1965: 43 (junior syn. of Diponthus cribratus ); Carbonell et al. 2023 ( Diponthus cribratus ); Cigliano et al. 2023 ( Diponthus cribratus ).

Acridium nigroconspersum is the type species of the genus, subsequently designated by Kirby, W. F. (1910) in “A Synonymic Catalogue of Orthoptera ( Orthoptera Saltatoria , Locustidae vel Acridiidae )”, 3(2): 674 pp.

Comments. Dirsh (1965) considered Diponthus nigroconspersus (Stål) as junior synonym of Diponthus cribratus (Serville) . However, after examination of type specimens of D. cribratus and D. nigroconspersus , and based on the original descriptions, as well as the examination of specimens collected in the distribution area of the species, we consider that Diponthus nigroconspersus is a valid species.

Diagnosis. Pronotal disc with a median dorsal longitudinal yellow band, wide in prozona, thinner in metazona; prozona with two oblique bands and lower area of lateral lobes yellow-ochre; metazona with circular mottles darkcolored in lateral lobes and elongated in metazona (Figs. 3a, b, and 7a, b). Similar to D. crassus , from which it differs by the color pattern of the tegmina and the vein pattern: irregular transverse veins without delimiting cells and with small light brown spots on them; longitudinal veins dark brown (Figs. 4c, d, 5h, and 8n); lower face of hind femur and hind tibia red (Fig. 4c); valves of cingulum C-shaped in lateral view, with narrow base, and distal portion expanded (Fig. 10n); dorsal valves of aedeagus short and thick (Figs. 10n, and 11n). Tegmina reaching (females) or exceeding (males) the end of abdomen (Figs. 4c, d, and 5h).

Description. Medium-sized insects. Male: integument of head rugose, except on dorsum and postocular area. Fastigium slightly excavated, apex slightly concave. Interocular distance equal to the width of fastigium apex. Eyes rather prominent and subcircular, exceeding the level of vertex in lateral view. Integument of prozona faveolated on dorsum and sides; metazona reticulate. Prozona as long as or slightly longer than metazoan. Mid-dorsal longitudinal carina of pronotum almost obsolete, cut by three transverse sulci. Transverse sulci very deep and well-marked on dorsum and sides. Anterior margin of pronotum emarginated in the middle, posterior margin of disc very open/wide V-shaped, almost straight. Prosternal tubercle straight with rounded apex. Tegmina and hind wings exceeding the end of abdomen, with rounded apex. Tegmina with irregular transverse veins without delimiting cells, and with small light brown spots on them. Cerci wide at base, narrowing gradually, barely exceeding the end of epiproct. Epiproct short, with rounded lateral edges, and posterior edge angulate, large furculae place apart from the midline, with the tips directed inwards. Phallic complex (Figs. 10n, 11n, and 12a, b): valves of cingulum C-shaped in lateral view, narrow base, and expanded distal portion. Dorsal valves of aedeagus short and thick. Cingulum wide Ushaped, with wide zygoma. Epiphallus with lophi parallel to the bridge, extended but without reaching the posterior processes of lateral plates; triangular shape in frontal view.

Chromatic characters. Body color greenish black with light brown (Fig. 4c, d). Head with a wide mid-dorsal longitudinal band light brown that continues along the pronotum disc. Light brown antennae. Pronotum black or greenish black, with anterior and posterior margins of lateral lobes light brown. Disc of pronotum with spots on both sides of the median carina within the areas delimited by the transverse sulci. Meso and metapleurae dark green. Tegmina with small light brown spots on the transverse veins; longitudinal veins dark brown. Hind wings ocher yellow. Legs: anterior and middle light brown. Hind leg light brown with a black or greenish-black longitudinal band on outer face of femur; inner face of femur black-greenish; lower face of femur and hind tibia bright red. Abdomen ocher, apex of cerci, tubercles of epiproct and tips of furculae black.

Females. Similar to males, but more robust. Tegmina and hind wings not exceeding the end of abdomen (Fig. 5h).

Measurements (in mm). Body length: males: 27.5 (27–28); female: 33. Hind femur length: males: 14; female: 18.5. Tegmina length: males: 19.5 (19–20); female: 23.

Distribution. This species is distributed in Brazil (Paraná) (Fig. 13).

Integument of prozona slightly faveolated dorsally, impresso-punctuate and shiny on lateral lobes; metazona rugose. Prosternal tubercle wide, laterally compressed with rounded apex. Tegmina surpassing the end of abdomen, apex with distal margin angulate and basal margin rounded; transverse veins delimiting rather large irregular cells. Cerci wide at the base, distal third slightly curved downwards with truncated apex, surpassing the end of epiproct. Epiproct with rounded sides, with pointed apex, tubercles on posterior margin, prominent furculae with acute tips. Phallic complex (Figs. 10i, 11i, and 12a, b): dorsal valves of aedeagus short, distal third curved downwards, apex acute and weakly sclerotized. Valves of cingulum subtriangular, with posterior edge prominent. Cingulum wide V-shaped.
Redescription. Medium-sized insects (Fig. 4g, h). Male: fastigium excavated, apex slightly concave. Interocular distance as or slightly wider than the apex of fastigium. Eyes prominent, sub-circular, exceeding the level of vertex in lateral view. Frons oblique; union frons-fastigium rounded. Antennae very long. Mid-dorsal longitudinal carina obsolete, cut by three well-marked and deep transverse sulci. Anterior margin of pronotum emarginate, posterior margin of disc angulate, lateral edges of metazona disc elevated. Integument of prozona strongly rugose on dorsum; faveolated on sides; metazona reticulate. Meso and metapleuras strongly rugose, tending to reticulate. Prosternal tubercle straight, with rounded apex. Metazona slightly longer than prozona. Tegmina and hind wings reaching the end of abdomen, or just exceeding it. Tegmina with transverse veins delimiting irregular cells. Anterior and middle legs with robust femora and tibiae. Hind femur thin. Cerci long, with wide and blunt apex, slightly incurved, widely surpassing the tip of epiproct. Epiproct oval, with pointed tip and tubercles on distal half; furculae lobed, with pointed apex. Phallic complex (Figs. 10p, 11p, and 12a, b): dorsal valves of aedeagus short and wide. Valves of cingulum similar to D. salvadorii sp. nov. with less expanded distal portion. Epiphallus with small lophi, parallel to the bridge, with acute apex, extended but without reaching the posterior processes of lateral plates.

Chromatic characters. Body color greenish brown with tan color (Fig. 4g, h). Head greenish-brown, with a wide mid-dorsal light brown band. Antennae purple, escape and pedicel greenish. Pronotum greenish brown, sometimes with light burgundy tints, with a wide mid-dorsal light brown band, delimited by thin dark brown bands (Fig. 7a, b). Meso and metapleurae greenish brown. Tegmina light burgundy with discal area yellow and dark veins (Fig. 8p). Hind wings with remigium light burgundy and anal area hyaline to very light green. Anterior and middle legs tan colored. Hind femur tan with a thin longitudinal band dark burgundy on the outer face; inner face dark burgundy except for the apical tip which is tan. Hind tibiae with outer surface tan colored and inner burgundy. Abdomen tan colored; subgenital plate and epiproct tan colored with the tips of cerci and furculae, and tubercles black colored.

Females. Similar to males but more robust.
