Notes on Suphis intermedius Régimbart, 1903

(Figs 2, 15, 19–23)

We take the opportunity to report new locality data extending the distribution of this species, and to illustrate its male genitalia for the first time, with the purpose of comparing them with those of S. fluviatilis (see differential diagnosis above). Type material examined. BRAZIL: Mato Grosso State. 15 syntypes, labelled “ MNHN / EC10415 ” to “ MNHN / EC10429 ” [typed, white labels]: “Brésil / Prov. Matto-Grosso / P. Germain / 1886” [typed, white label], “intermedius Reg ” [handwritten, white label], “ MUSEUM PARIS / 1952 / coll. R. OBERTHÜR” [typed, white label], “ SYNTYPE ” [typed, red label], “SYNTYPE / Suphis / intermedius Régimbart , / 1903” [typed, white label]. 1 syntype labelled “ MNHN / EC10413 ” [typed, white label]: same data as above except that the label “ MUSEUM PARIS / 1952 / coll. R. OBERTHÜR” is replaced by “ MUSEUM PARIS / COLL. MAURICE REGIMBART / 1908” [typed, light blue label]. 1 syntype labelled “ MNHN / EC10414 ” [typed, white label]: same data as above except without the label “intermedius Reg ”. Additional material examined. BRAZIL: Mato Grosso State. 2 ♁♁ (habitus and male genitalia in Figs 15, 19–21), 1 ♀ and 36 exs, Corumbá, Col. Zimmermann (ZSM) . PARAGUAY: Canindeyú Department. 2 ♀♀ (habitus in Fig. 22), Reserva Natural del Bosque Mbaracayú , 14.XII.2003, Col. Di Iorio (LEBA) .

Diagnosis. TL = 2.8–3.25 mm. [mean = 3.00 mm]. Background color brownish-red, elytra marmorated (Figs 2, 19, 21, 22); dorsal surface with macro- and micropunctation (Fig. 23); pronotum with 16 spots, with central spots smaller, subcircular and well defined (Figs 2, 19, 21, 22); lateral margins of metacoxal processes divergent posteriorly (Fig. 20); male genitalia as in Fig. 15: left lateral lobe bearing a single tuft of setae (Fig. 15b), median lobe in lateral view (Figs 15d, f) with apex rounded, in dorsal view (Fig. 15e) with base comprised of perpendicular lateral notches.

Male genitalia (Fig. 15). Aedeagus asymmetrical; right lateral wall of segment IX rhomboid-like (Fig. 15a), posterior margin with notch, ventral lobe more projected backwards, apex of left lateral wall of segment IX (only part of this structure could be observed) pointed; left lateral lobe in lateral view (Fig. 15b) relatively elongate, slender, slightly curved, with single tuft of hair-like setae on distal third, longer at apex; right lateral lobe in lateral view (Fig. 15c) relatively short, robust, with deep longitudinal groove on dorsal side, creating an inward fold, left lateral flange reduced ventrally, apex with setae of different lengths; median lobe (Figs 15d–f) longer than lateral lobes, in lateral view robust, width nearly uniform along its length, apex rounded; slightly curved dorsally at about mid length, ventrally with deep longitudinal groove subtended by lateral flanges, left lateral flange slightly enlarged, expanded ventrally, converging with right side at or near apex; in dorsal aspect, slightly curved to the left side; base large, comprised of perpendicular lateral notches.

Distribution. So far, the species was known only from Brazil (Grosso 1993). Here we add the first record from Paraguay.
