Aethes larissae Budashkin & Richter sp. nov.

(Figs. 5–8)

Type material. Holotype ♂, North Macedonia, Galičica Nacional Park, Asan Gjura , 15–16.vi.2017 (I. R.) GP 30438 IgR . Paratype ♂, North Macedonia, same data as for the holotype (I. R.) DNA Barcode TLMF Lep 28715 .

Diagnosis. Externally and by the structure of male genitalia, the new species most closely resembles Aethes caucasica (Amsel, 1959) (Amsel 1959) . However, the new species has wider brown dorsal spot on the forewings. In the male genitalia, it differs from A. caucasica , by the wider socii, broader valva, and aedeagus and, in particular, by the much more stout cornutus. Despite that the COI p-distance of 1.99% between these species lies near the low limit for standard DNA barcode species delimitation (2–4%), they exhibit pronounced morphological characters that clearly separate A. caucasica and A. larissae sp. nov.

Description. Adult (Fig. 5). Sexual dimorphism unknown. Wingspan 17 mm. Head (Figs. 6, 7) and thorax comparatively large, covered with dirty yellow scales, frons lighter, tegulae dirty yellow; labial palpus of middle length, thick, 2 nd segment much longer than 3 rd segment, wide, densely covered with very long scales, upper side dirty yellow, lateral side brownish. Segment 3 short, concolorous with second segment. Scapus brown, remaining antennal segments brown, with dirty–yellow rings and densely ciliated in males. Forewing yellow, relatively long and narrow, apex triangular, tornal angle expressed. The wing pattern consists of relatively wide brown dorsal spot and incomplete subterminal fascia. On subterminal fascia, two large brown spots are visible in lower part of the wing, and one smaller and lighter spot at costal margin of wing. Cilia line not visible, cilia yellow. Hindwing and cilia dark brown.

Male genitalia. (Fig. 8): Tegumen trapezoidal, broad. Socii relatively long and thick. Median part of transtilla relatively strong and medium wide, trapezoidal, terminally narrowing and with large cloves. Valva broad in basal part, markedly narrowed to top, its lower edge evenly rounded.Aedeagus very broad and short, with a large triangular process ventroapically. Cornutus aciculate, stout, large (longer than half length of the aedeagus), narrow oval with a pointed apex.

Molecular data. BIN BOLD: BOLD ACG2061 (n=2). The nearest neighbour is Ae. caucasica with 1.99% pdistance.

Bionomy. Bionomy and early stages are unknown. Habitat (Fig. 9).

Distribution. Known from North Macedonia only.

Etymology. The new species is named in honour the wife of the first author, Larisa Vadimovna Streltsova, a charming woman, a great soul of a person and a major professional specialist in her work field.

Slovakia (Razowski 2002, 2009) was included in the range of this species by mistake, as a result of an incorrect identification of the only male, which was later redetermined as Aethes flagellana (Duponchel, [1836]) (Tokár et al. 1999) .

Note. Our study on A. kasyi from the Balkans confirms the conclusion of Yuriy Budashkin (1993) about the synonymy of A. kasyi with A. speciosa Razowski, 1962 , as well as the incorrect representation of the male genitalia of this species in the revision of the Palaearctic Cochylini and European and Palaearctic Tortricidae (Razowski 1970, fig. 222, Kuznetzov 1978, fig. 248.1, Razowski 2002, fig. 168, Razowski 2009, fig. 266). The male genitalia of A. kasyi have been illustrated only on the German lepidopterological forum website so far (Lepiforum 2021).

Note. Aethes eichleri was described based on single female collected in Pirin Mountains in Bulgaria. The male of this species remained unknown (Razowski 1983, 2002, 2009).

The examined females from Croatia and North Macedonia match well to Ae. eichleri . However, males collected sympatrically with females of A. eichleri and similar to them externally have no differences in the genitalia from specimens of A. francillana . Similarly, the DNA barcoding data did not reveal any differences between A. francillana and our specimens. Hence we establish the above synonymy.

Aethes kindermanniana macedonica Richter & Budashkin , ssp. nov.

(Figs. 20, 21)

Type material. Holotype ♂, North Macedonia, Galičica Nacional park, Asan Gjura , 30.vii.2019 (I. R.). GP 30461 IgR . Paratypes 2♂, same data as for the holotype (I. R). DNA Barcode TMLF Lep 28719 .

Diagnosis. The new subspecies is close to Aethes kindermanniana kindermanniana (Treitschke, 1830) (Treitschke 1830) (Figs 18, 19) by habitus and the structure of male genitalia, but differs by larger size, more diffuse and lighter pattern of the forewing. Additionally, hindwing is lighter and thinner, socii are less prickly, the acantae on the apex of the median process of transtilla are larger, and the medioventral process of the aedeagus more slender. Although the new subspecies is insufficiently supported by molecular data (0.31% distance from the nominate subspecies), the morphological differences suggest the existence of a separate subspecies from North Macedonia.

Description. Adult (Fig. 20). Sexual dimorphism unknown. Wingspan 13 mm. The basic colour of head, tegulae and thorax white to pale yellow. Patagia, anterior part of tegulae and posterior part of thorax deep yellow. Scales on patagia and on posterior part of thorax long and erect. The labial palpi of medium length, thick. Segment 3 much shorter than segment 2. Upper side dirty white, lateral side ochreous–yellow. Segment 3 brown, white at the tip. Scapus deep yellow, antennae brown, circled dirty yellow, densely covered with small hairs in males. Forewing medium wide, triangular, with a relatively well pronounced tornal angle. Its main colour dirty white. Forewing pattern blurred, consists of olive and dark olive spots and bands. Median band most prominent, noticeably widening towards costa, preapical band significantly shorter, runs from tornal angle of wing almost perpendicular to its costal margin. Cilia line olive or dark olive, cilia yellowish white or dirty white. Hindwing light grey, with dirty white cilia.

Male genitalia. (Fig. 21). Tegumen wide and short. Socii thin, with few spines on underside of their proximal parts. The median process of transtilla wide and short, rounded trapezoidal, with two large spines at apex. Valva rather narrow, noticeably narrowed towards apex. Aedeagus wide and short, with 3 spiny lobes on underside of its tube and on lateral sides, with a long and rather thin median process directed caudad. Cornuti absent.

Molecular data. BIN BOLD: BOLD AAF5176 (n=2). The differences from barcoded specimens from Bulgaria, Germany, Finland and Norway is 0.31% p-distance.

Bionomy. Bionomy and early stages are unknown. Habitat (Fig.9).

Distribution. Known from North Macedonia only.

Etymology. The name of this new subspecies is topotypical—given following the name of the country North Macedonia, where it was discovered.
