Argolepida is a small genus of diminutive flies with a body length rarely more than 7.5 mm. This is a very distinctive genus with a number of distinguishing features including the eyes of both sexes being widely separated, extensive pile of adpressed silver-white and black scale-like setae over the entire body, legs with elongate pale macrosetae and claws, and pulvilli small. There is limited sexual dimorphism in this genus with the frons only slightly narrower and vestiture only slightly more extensive in the male; the main sexually dimorphic feature is the presence and shape of the frontal glabrous patch (Fig. 32), which is larger and frequently characteristically shaped in the female. Males and females are also similarly sized. All species of Argolepida are restricted to the Chacoan, Monte and Patagonian provinces. Argolepida is placed in the Cerocatus genus group and is closely related to Dasythereva and Elcaribe Webb, 2006. Dasythereva and Argolepida share features such as the wide frons in both sexes and preponderance of scale-like setae over the body. The presence of setae on the metakatepisternum is rare in stiletto flies and is known only in Argolepida (some species) and Elcaribe.

Key to Argolepida species

1. Male frons with at most a minute, medial, glabrous area, female with sub–quadrangular glabrous area across frons; wing with distinct markings; abdominal tergites 1–6 with white scale-like adpressed setae; femora mostly dark basally.

Description. Body length: 4.0–5.0 mm. Head with frons flat (male) (Fig. 32I) or slightly raised (female) (Fig. 32J), pubescence light brown dorsally, greyish silver ventrally, glossy black glabrous area medially, very small in male, sub-quadrangular and surrounded with orange pubescence in female; frons with few short pale setae below ocellar tubercle; postocular setae light brown, occiput pubescence grey, white, scale-like setae abundant medially; antennal scape and flagellum brown, overlain with grey pubescence. Thorax with scutal pubescence brown, large dark spot often adjacent to supra-alar callus, short erect filiform setae admixed with adpressed white scale-like setae, denser anteriorly; scutal macrosetae brown (chaetotaxy as per genus description); pleuron with dense silver-grey pubescence admixed with extensive semi-erect white scale-like setae; katatergite with admixed strong filiform and scale-like setae; coxae dark, overlain with silver-grey pubescence, setae white, mid coxa without setae on posterior surface; femora yellow, grey-brown in apical third, dense covering of white scale-like adpressed setae; tibiae yellow, dark grey-brown apically; tarsi brown; wing hyaline with areas of white translucency; dark markings apically in cells cu-p, bm and d, and centrally in cell br; venation dark; haltere orange. Abdomen base colour mostly dark brown, adpressed white scale-like setae on segments 1–6, black on rest; terminalia brown. Male and female genitalia as per genus description except ejaculatory apodeme broadly spatulate anteriorly, lateral ejaculatory apodeme relatively large.

Etymology. The specific epithet refers to the Patagonian region where this species is found.

Comments. Argolepida patagonia sp. n. is a distinctive, yet variable species with the intensity of wing markings and size of lateral brown spots of the scutum varying from faint to very dark, and coverage of white adpressed setae ranging from dense to sparse. This species appears closely related to A. schlingeri sp. n.; it is distributed widely in southern Argentina and Chile.

Type material. Male frontal glabrous area relatively large, surrounded by yellow suffused pubescence; frontal area straight sided in both sexes with dorsal projections (medially and lateral corners); wing with similar markings in both sexes; abdominal tergites 1–5 with white adpressed scale-like setae.

Redescription. Body length: 6.0– 7.5 mm. Head with frons flat (male) or slightly rounded (female) with pubescence light brownish orange dorsally, silver around antennal base, glossy black glabrous area medially with characteristic ‘tulip’ or ‘crown’ shape (Figs 32K–L), larger in female, few short pale setae below ocellar tubercle; postocular setae pale or black, pubescence along postocular ridge grey, medial occiput brown, white, scale-like setae abundant medially; antennal scape dark yellow-orange, overlain with grey pubescence; flagellum brownish orange, darker distally with grey pubescence. Thorax with scutal pubescence dark yellowish brown with light-grey dorsocentral stripes, yellow scale-like setae, denser laterally, scutal macrosetae yellow (chaetotaxy as per genus description); pleuron with dense silver-grey pubescence, few white scale-like setae on anepisternum and katepisternum, katatergite with admixed strong filiform and scale-like setae, anepisternum brownish in dorsal half; coxae dark, overlain with silver-grey pubescence, setae white, mid coxa without setae on posterior surface; femora yellow, dense covering of white scale-like adpressed setae; tibiae yellow, dark grey-brown apically; tarsi dark yellow with apices brown; wing hyaline, infuscate along wing veins and apically in cells cu-p, bm and d; venation yellow basally along major veins, darker distally; haltere stem orange-brown, knob yellow. Abdomen base colour dark brown, yellow medially, extensive adpressed setae, yellow medially, black laterally, white posteriorly and ventrally on each segment 1–5; segments 6–8 and terminalia black. Male and female genitalia as per genus description except ejaculatory apodeme broadly spatulate anteriorly, lateral ejaculatory apodeme relatively small.

Comments. The frontal patch is distinctive for this species and its shape is reminiscent of a ‘tulip’ or ‘crown’, and unlike other Argolepida species, the frontal patch is similarly large in both sexes, although slightly smaller and more parallel sided in the male. As noted by Webb et al. (2013), the lectotype designation by Metz et al. (2003) was unjustified as Kröber (1928) clearly distinguished a type and co-type in his original description. Argolepida rivulosa has a relatively broad distribution, being recorded in Argentina, Bolivia and Uruguay.

Type material.
