Type — Arecocaryon messelense (M.E. Collinson, Manchester & V. Wilde) Doweld, comb. nov.
≡ Friedemannia messelensis M.E. Collinson, Manchester & V. Wilde, Abh. Senckenberg. Naturf. Ges. 570: 20. 2012
Holotype — GERMANY: Hesse, Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg, Messel (SM. B Me 2135, Senckenberg Naturhistorische Sammlungen Frankfurt, Senckenberg Forschungsinstitut und Naturmuseum, Frankfurt am Main, Germany) – figured: pl. 5d.
IFPNI registration LSID: 3C9EA5A9-F421-493A-B313-8AC95E0D3323.
Stratigraphy: Eocene (Lutetian).
Etymology: by superficial likeness to the fruits of extant Arecaceae .
The distinctive fossil fruits of the Eocene sediments of Messel formed a distinct fossil-genus Friedemannia M.E. Collinson et al. (2012) . However, the fossil generic name is preoccupied by the generic name of well-known chlorococcoid algae, Friedmannia Chantanachat & Bold (1962) . In this connection, a new generic name, Arecocaryon nom. nov., is proposed in place of Friedemannia M.E. Collinson et al. (2012) .
