This species is known to be very variable, showing differences in size and colour (Rozkošný 1982). Contrary to Rozkošný’s remarks, according to which the scutellum is yellow and shows a large semi-circular basal spot, the scutellum of the female from Emam is completely black and only the tips of the spines are yellow coloured. Furthermore, the size of the female is 13 millimetres and exceeds the maximum size of the species given by Rozkošný (1982) by one millimetre.

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/03A9878E6D47185AF7DCFD38FDC2FBA5	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Krivosheina (2014) points to the resemblance between this species and the oriental species Adoxomyia heminopla (Wiedemann, 1819). Her key to distinguish both species (published in Russian), is translated here:

1. Spines of scutellum short, their length less than half the length of scutellum and equal to about 1/4 of the distance between them; silver pubescence of forehead triangle in male not reaching base of antennae; forehead of female with relatively sparse pale pubescence on upper half, two longitudinal stripes with two narrow pale patches of dense pubescence on lower half of forehead, separated from base of antennae by a black transverse stripe; pedicel and three basal segments of flagellum of male and female reddish........................................................................... Adoxomyia cinerascens

- Spines of scutellum long, almost reaching the length of scutellum; distance between them is at least 4/5 of their length; silver pubescence of forehead triangle of male covers entire surface and reaches base of antennae; female with silvery transverse stripe in the middle part of forehead, followed by a broad black shining stripe; two large conspicuous areas of silvery hairs reaching base of antennae; antennae of males entirely black, first three segments of flagellum of female reddish.............................................................................................
