03E6D042FFF2310A35B6F361BE90F891.taxon	diagnosis	Diagnosis. Linoderus smetanai differs from L. alajuelensis and L. gracilipes in the distinct colour pattern: head and prothorax dark metallic blue, elytra metallic green, abdomen with first five visible abdominal segments reddish brown and apical abdominal segments dark brown to black; antennae and palpi mostly reddish brown to brown, with legs and styli dark brown to black as well as the first antennomere moderately longer than half of head length *, labial palpus with second palpomere about as long as third *, the first metatarsomere not sexually dimorphic in length *; the abdominal tergites 3 – 5 with posterior basal transverse carina (PBTC) complete and straight, space behind PBTC not distinctly punctate * and the sternite 9 with several apical setae at each side of emargination are also unique to this species. * Not shown as characters with interspecific variation in the redescription of the genus by Chani-Posse & Solodovnikov (2017)	en	Chani-Posse, Mariana Raquel (2021): A new species of the southern Central American genus Linoderus Sharp (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Staphylininae) with a revised key and an updated phylogeny. 03E6D042FFF2310A35B6F361BE90F891.taxon	description	Description. Body length 7.7 – 8.5 mm. Colouration: as in diagnosis (Figs. 1, 2). Head slightly longer than wide (HW / HL = 0.93 – 0.94), moderately wider than pronotum (HW / PW = 1.16 – 1.18). Eyes distinctly shorter than temples (EL / TL = 0.65; both sexes) seen from above (Figs. 1, 2). Antennae with 1 st antennomere moderately longer than half of head length (A 1 / HL = 0.66; both sexes), moderately shorter than 2 nd and 3 rd combined, 3 rd about 1.5 × as long as 2 nd. Labial palpus with 2 nd palpomere about twice as long as 1 st, about as long as 3 rd. Maxillary palpus with 4 th palpomere (apical) 1.8 × as long as 3 rd. Neck about 0.4 × as wide as head at widest point. Pronotum distinctly longer than wide (PW / PL = 0.71 – 0.72), dorsal rows of punctures each with four punctures, 2 nd and 3 rd more distant to each other than 2 nd to 1 st and 3 rd to 4 th. Elytra at sides about 1.5 × as long as elytra along suture (EtL / Etl = 1.57; both sexes). First metatarsomere not sexually dimorphic in length, distinctly longer than 5 th in both sexes (S 1 / S 5 = 1.55 – 1.66). Abdominal tergites 3 – 5 with posterior basal transverse carina complete and straight, space behind not distinctly punctate. Male sexual characters: Sternite 8 with medially produced and subangulately emarginate projection (Fig. 3). Sternite 9 with basal portion distinctly asymmetrical, 1.8 × as long as distal portion and deeply emarginate apically, with several apical setae at each side of emargination (Fig. 4). Genital segment with lateral tergal sclerites 9 (styli) dorsoventrally flattened and moderately dilated, with a distinct latero-apical emargination (Fig. 8); tergite 10 subtruncate apically. Aedeagus with median lobe gradually narrowed from about distal half of paramere length and with acute apex; apex of paramere distinctly notched at middle (Figs. 6, 7). Female sexual characters: Sternite 8 with hind margin projected medially (Fig. 10). Genital segment with lateral tergal sclerites 9 (styli) dorsoventrally flattened and not distinctly dilated, with a moderate latero-apical emargination (Fig. 12); tergum 10 subangulate to arcuate apically (Fig. 9); second gonocoxites each with a long macroseta, with minute stylus (Fig. 11) bearing one long apical macroseta. Geographical distribution. Linoderus smetanai has been recorded from four different localities in Western Costa Rica within the 1480 – 1640 m range of elevation.	en	Chani-Posse, Mariana Raquel (2021): A new species of the southern Central American genus Linoderus Sharp (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Staphylininae) with a revised key and an updated phylogeny.
