03B9EA727F32FFBDFF7DFF6B3FC0FA71.taxon	discussion	Remarks. This species is known only from Hoek's original description. Hoek's holotype now looks as though its plates are not fully calcified and, although Hoek did not mentioned this in the text, he did stress the dificulty in discerning the limits of the plates covered by a thick chitinous membrane. The original description and the original figures appear to show fully calcified plates (Hoek, 1883: pl. III, fig. 13 – 14). However, the length of the capitulum (31 mm) and peduncle (10 mm) of the specimen match the data from the original description and the specimen is attached to a piece of flat substrate as figured by Hoek. We believe that this is the same specimen, the holotype, as figured by Hoek. The plates are reduced, but the outline shapes of the individual plates are as Hoek described and illustrated if the non-calcified parts are included.	en	Shalaeva, Kate, Boxshall, Geoff (2014): An illustrated catalogue of the scalpellid barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Scalpellidae) collected during the HMS “ Challenger ” expedition and deposited in the Natural History Museum, London. 03B9EA727F30FFB0FF7DFB373FEBFF70.taxon	discussion	Remarks. The taxonomic status and morphological variability of A. japonicum and A. j. biramosum are in need of re-evaluation because of significant intraspecific variation in plate morphology, which seems to be dependent on body size. Changes during ontogenetic development include: the loss of the hairs on the external cuticle; the tergum becomes clearly bifurcate; the scutum develops two or three distinct branches; the shape of the carinal latus changes from quadrilateral to triangular or v-shaped, the rostral margin may show incipient branching; the shape of the upper latus changes from pentagonal to triangular, the carinal margin becomes branched; and the rostral latus carinal margin may be branched.	en	Shalaeva, Kate, Boxshall, Geoff (2014): An illustrated catalogue of the scalpellid barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Scalpellidae) collected during the HMS “ Challenger ” expedition and deposited in the Natural History Museum, London. 03B9EA727F3EFFB4FF7DF8EE3C44FE95.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Foster (1980) inferred that the degree of reduction of the shell plates in L. intermedium increases with growth. After the capitulum reaches about 10 mm in length, the tergum, scutum, upper latus and carinal latus all bifurcate and become more widely separated, which was recognised by Newman & Ross (1971) as typical for the genus Gymnoscalpellum. Unfortunately, the quality of Foster's photographs of the early stages does not allow comparison of shell plate details between his specimens and those of Hoek (1883). Newman & Ross (1971) also noted the similarity between this species and Gymnoscalpellum tarasovi. It is clear that more detailed study of appendage morphology and / or analysis of molecular data will be needed to confirm the correct generic placement of this species.	en	Shalaeva, Kate, Boxshall, Geoff (2014): An illustrated catalogue of the scalpellid barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Scalpellidae) collected during the HMS “ Challenger ” expedition and deposited in the Natural History Museum, London. Genus Neoscalpellum Pilsbry, 1907 Neoscalpellum Pilsbry, 1907 a: 69; Newman & Ross, 1971: 96; Zevina, 1978 b: 1346; Young, 2007: 16. Diagnosis. Capitulum with 14 significantly reduced plates; tergum an inverted V-shape; scutum with basal margin notched and long apicolateral arm; upper latus bifid, umbo apical; carinal latus higher than wide, commonly bifurcate apically, umbo medial or sub-medial; inframedian latus slender, longer than wide, commonly bifurcate apically, with medial or sub-medial umbo; rostral latus longer than wide, with notched or bifurcate carinal margin; caudal appendage long, with four or more segments. Type species. Scalpellum dicheloplax Pilsbry, 1907 a. Composition. Seven species. Distribution. Worldwide. Known depth range 1600 to 6180 m. Remarks. Scalpellum dicheloplax Pilsbry, 1907 a is now considered to be a junior subjective synonym of Neoscalpellum debile (Aurivillius, 1898) (see Young, 2007). The species of this genus are not easily definable due to the extensive variability of plate size and shape. Zevina’s key (1981 a), therefore, might not be reliable for accurate species identification. An alternative key was provided by Young (2007) based on more stable characters, such as the capitulum shape and the pattern of the peduncular plates.	en	Shalaeva, Kate, Boxshall, Geoff (2014): An illustrated catalogue of the scalpellid barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Scalpellidae) collected during the HMS “ Challenger ” expedition and deposited in the Natural History Museum, London. 03B9EA727F39FFB6FF7DFEDB3E79F8DF.taxon	discussion	Remarks. This specimen was taken together with the holotype of S. marginatum identified by Hoek (1883) and was described by Hoek (1883) “ after much hesitation ” as a new species, Scalpellum ovatum (the name S. ovaliscus is given on the old label in the NHM collection). Scalpellum ovatum was considered to be a synonym of N. marginatum by Newman & Ross (1971) but was reinstated as a valid species by Young (2007). In neither case was the holotype studied. We follow Young in maintaining the two species as valid until further comparative study of both holotypes can be undertaken. Newman & Ross (1971: 67 – 68) noted a close resemblance between this species and Teloscalpellum latuscutum (Newman & Ross, 1971) from the southwestern edge of Southeast Pacific (4758 – 4804 m) and Amigdoscalpellum semisculptum (Pilsbry, 1907 a) from the Gulf of Mexico (512 m). The major feature uniting these three species is the very narrow inframedian latus, which is triangular and close to linear in A. semisculptum and A. tenue, but rectangular in A. latuscutum, nearly reaching the upper latus. In the “ Challenger ” specimen we also found that the carina has low but strong bordering ribs, as in A. semisculptum and P. latuscutum.	en	Shalaeva, Kate, Boxshall, Geoff (2014): An illustrated catalogue of the scalpellid barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Scalpellidae) collected during the HMS “ Challenger ” expedition and deposited in the Natural History Museum, London. 03B9EA727F24FFACFF7DFF6B3EAFFBE3.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Foster (1980) placed this species in the genus Graviscalpellum Foster, 1980 together with Trianguloscalpellum annandalei (Calman, 1918), Litoscalpellum giganteum (Gruvel, 1902 a), Trianguloscalpellum gigas (Hoek, 1883), Alcockianum persona (Annandale, 1916), Arcoscalpellum portoricanum (Pilsbry, 1907 a), Litoscalpellum regina (Pilsbry, 1907 a), and Trianguloscalpellum rubrum (Hoek, 1883). These are scalpellids that are all hermaphroditic, attain a relatively large size, and possess lower latera (about 1 / 10 of the height of the capitulum). According to the latest revision by Young (2007), the genus Graviscalpellum is a synonym of Anguloscalpellum. 03B9EA727F23FFADFF7DF9723E6DF82A.taxon	discussion	Remarks. This species is known from the holotype only. Hoek (1883) noted similarities between the carinal latus of A. dubium and that of Trianguloscalpellum regium (W. Thomson, 1873) and Arcoscalpellum michelottianum (Seguenza, 1876). Newman & Ross (1971) noted similarities with Arcoscalpellum acicularum Newman & Ross, 1971 from off the Falkland Islands taken at a depth of 4008 m, although they also pointed to the absence of a rostral plate in A. dubium as a major diagnostic feature separating these two species. We report here the presence of a small, transparent rostrum in the “ Challenger ” holotype. More detailed comparative study is required in order to confirm the validity of these species.	en	Shalaeva, Kate, Boxshall, Geoff (2014): An illustrated catalogue of the scalpellid barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Scalpellidae) collected during the HMS “ Challenger ” expedition and deposited in the Natural History Museum, London. 03B9EA727F20FFAFFF7DFF6B3EF8F966.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Although this species has been reported numerous times worldwide, there is considerable confusion concerning its morphology. There appears to be marked variation in morphology according to the stage of ontogenetic development, for example the degree of projection and the umbo position of the carinal latus can vary during development. Newman & Ross (1971) found the carinal border of the plate was not projecting and the umbo was apical, whereas Hoek (1883) found the umbo projecting on the top of the carinal margin. In contrast, Chan et al. (2009) noted the umbo in the middle region of the carinal margin and Zevina (1981 a) reported the umbo to be higher than the middle of the margin. The current synonymy is based mainly on Withers (1953), but Hoek’s specimens of S. velutinum and S. eximium were assigned to A. michelottianum based only on shell plate details. These synonymies should be revisited when all the appendage characters are considered. The name Scalpellum michelottianum was firstly proposed by Seguenza in 1876 for a reconstructed fossil from Italy. Thus, the recent specimens from the North Atlantic, the types of S. velutinum and S. eximium, described by Hoek (1883) have no type status with regard to A. michelottianum.	en	Shalaeva, Kate, Boxshall, Geoff (2014): An illustrated catalogue of the scalpellid barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Scalpellidae) collected during the HMS “ Challenger ” expedition and deposited in the Natural History Museum, London. 03B9EA727F28FF98FF7DFA183E56FF5B.taxon	discussion	Remarks. A thorough redescription of the appendages is needed. Hoek (1883) based his description on three “ full-grown specimens ” from Stn 146. The jar in the NHM collection contains two vials: one with two large (Fig. 20 A, B; capitulum length 8 mm) and one medium size (Fig. 20 C; capitulum length 5 mm) specimens, the other with one medium size specimen (Fig. 20 D; capitulum length 6 mm), one small specimen and some fragments. We infer that the former vial contains the three specimens mentioned by Hoek (1883). The latter vial is treated as additional material, and should not be accorded type status. 03B9EA727F14FF9BFF7DFDDF3CC2FB8A.taxon	discussion	Remarks. The holotype is dry and in poor condition. Designating a neotype is probably advisable in order to stabilise its nomenclature. Genus Teloscalpellum Zevina, 1978 Arcoscalpellum Hoek, 1907: 85 (part); Pilsbry, 1907 a: 47; Newman & Ross, 1971: 42 (part). Teloscalpellum Zevina, 1978 b: 1350. Diagnosis. Capitulum with 13 or 14 plates; inframedian latus triangular or rod-shaped, umbo apical or sub-apical; carinal latus umbo at basi-carinal angle, not or only slightly extending beyond carinal margin; caudal appendage typically multi-segmented (up to nine segments), sometimes one segment or none. Type species. Scalpellum spicatum Zevina, 1975. Composition. 18 species. Distribution. Worldwide, except Arctic; known depth range 90 to 4758 m. Remarks. Zevina (1978 b) pointed out that only the basicarinal umbo of the carinal latus distinguishes this genus from Arcoscalpellum, Trianguloscalpellum Zevina, 1978, Anguloscalpellum and Diceroscalpellum Zevina, 1978. Young (1999 a) overlooked this genus in his preliminary re-assessment of the Scalpellidae, but did include it in his later assessment (Young, 2007). At present, the phylogenetic position of Teloscalpellum among other genera of the subfamily Arcoscalpellinae has yet to be established.	en	Shalaeva, Kate, Boxshall, Geoff (2014): An illustrated catalogue of the scalpellid barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Scalpellidae) collected during the HMS “ Challenger ” expedition and deposited in the Natural History Museum, London. 03B9EA727F13FF9DFF7DFD9F39F4FD80.taxon	discussion	Remarks. The species is represented by a single specimen. It is distinguished by the particular form of the carinal latus that “ also may present variations within the limits of a species ” (Hoek, 1883). Genus Trianguloscalpellum Zevina, 1978 Arcoscalpellum Hoek, 1907: 85 (part); Pilsbry, 1907 a: 47; Newman & Ross, 1971: 42 (part). Trianguloscalpellum Zevina, 1978 b: 1349; Liu & Ren, 1985: 205. Diagnosis. Capitulum with 13 or 14 plates; carinal latus triangular, umbo apical; inframedian latus triangular or rectangular, umbo apical, reaching upper latus. Type species. Scalpellum balanoides Hoek, 1883. Composition. 25 species. Distribution. Worldwide, excluding Arctic. Known depth range 124 to 6135 m. Remarks. Trianguloscalpellum is diagnosed by the possession of an apical umbo on all of the plates, and comprises two distinct species groups. One group (cited by Pilsbry (1907 a) as Scalpellum velutinum (= Arcoscalpellum michelottianum) group) consists of species that attain a large size and have a thick and pilose cuticle. These species appear to be similar to some of the large species of the genera Litoscalpellum and Arcoscalpellum. The other group comprises species of Trianguloscalpellum that are very small and have a thin, often hairless cuticle. They are very different in appearance from the large species. The monophyletic status of this genus should be redefined by molecular analysis.	en	Shalaeva, Kate, Boxshall, Geoff (2014): An illustrated catalogue of the scalpellid barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Scalpellidae) collected during the HMS “ Challenger ” expedition and deposited in the Natural History Museum, London. 03B9EA727F12FF9DFF7DFB0F3CF2F8F7.taxon	discussion	Remarks. Pilsbry (1911) pointed out that T. album is morphologically similar to T. weltnerianum and noted that the difference between the two species is mainly that the plates of T. album are smooth. However, Hoek (1883) commented on the " beautiful striation " of the T. album plates under the microscope. Our observations of the holotype confirmed Hoek’s (1883) comment, therefore T. weltnerianum is here considered to be a junior subjective synonym of T. album.	en	Shalaeva, Kate, Boxshall, Geoff (2014): An illustrated catalogue of the scalpellid barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Scalpellidae) collected during the HMS “ Challenger ” expedition and deposited in the Natural History Museum, London. 03B9EA727F10FF91FF7DF9A63D8CFEC8.taxon	discussion	Remarks. There is uncertainty concerning the taxonomic status of this species. No reliable characters have been found to separate it from similar species, such as T. moluccanum (Hoek, 1883), T. regium (W. Thomson, 1873) and T. gigas (Hoek, 1883) (Foster & Buckeridge, 1995 a; Young, 2007). Most authors (e. g. Newman & Ross, 1971; Young, 1998 b), however, have included it in the Arcoscalpellum michelottianum group delimited by Pilsbry (1907 a).	en	Shalaeva, Kate, Boxshall, Geoff (2014): An illustrated catalogue of the scalpellid barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Scalpellidae) collected during the HMS “ Challenger ” expedition and deposited in the Natural History Museum, London. 03B9EA727F1BFF88FF7DF94B3C16FE95.taxon	discussion	Remarks. This species may be attributed to the Arcoscalpellum michelottianum group. Numerous specimens have been described from the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans and this species may represent a complex of cryptic species. Some authors such as Zevina (1981 a) and Poltarukha (2012) consider that T. regium is widely distributed across all regions, with the Pacific T. moluccanum treated as a synonym, whereas others retain them as separate species, e. g. Young (1998 b, 2007). According to Hoek (1883), “ numerous ” specimens of the species were found at two “ Challenger ” stations: 61 and 63. However, only two specimens (both from Stn 61) are now in the NHM collection. The two specimens, figured and referred as types by Young (1998 b), are treated here as syntypes, because it can be demonstrated that these were the specimens observed by Wyville-Thomson in his brief description in 1873. Both specimens are now in different stages of disintegration. One specimen (syntype A) (Fig. 33 A) has the tergum and the apical part of the carina separated (Fig. 33 B (b )). The other two fragments (tergum and scutum with the upper latus and upper fragment of the rostral latus joined) appear to belong to the second syntype (syntype B) (Fig. 33 B (a, c, d )).	en	Shalaeva, Kate, Boxshall, Geoff (2014): An illustrated catalogue of the scalpellid barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Scalpellidae) collected during the HMS “ Challenger ” expedition and deposited in the Natural History Museum, London. Nilsson-Cantell (1927). Distribution. Pacific, Western Central and Northwest. Known depth range 133 to 331 m. Remarks. A fragment of coral with one scalpellid specimen was described by Hoek (1883). This specimen could not be located. There are juvenile cirripedes attached to the same coral fragment which may belong to the same species, T. rubrum. However, these specimens should not be considered to be syntypes, because Hoek established the species based on a single specimen that cannot now be found. This species bears a close resemblance to Trianguloscalpellum diota (Hoek, 1907). In the absence of Hoek's holotype a comparison with T. diota could be made using a reference specimen of S. rubrum identified by Nilsson- Cantell taken in the Western Central Pacific and stored in the collections of the Natural History Museum (NHM UK 1931.6.1. 2 - 4).	en	Shalaeva, Kate, Boxshall, Geoff (2014): An illustrated catalogue of the scalpellid barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Scalpellidae) collected during the HMS “ Challenger ” expedition and deposited in the Natural History Museum, London. 03B9EA727F03FF8CFF7DFF6B3F3FFC9F.taxon	discussion	Remarks. According to the revision of the scalpellids by Zevina (1981 a), Scalpellum imperfectum (Pilsbry, 1907 a: 75, fig. 30, pl. IV, figs 15 – 18) is accepted as a synonym of Verum carinatum. However, the details of the plates differ, in particular the V-shaped tergum of S. imperfectum differs from that of S. carinatum. The description of the appendages in Zevina (1981 a) was translated from Pilsbry (1907 a) and may not be related to V. carinatum. A redescription of this species is needed.	en	Shalaeva, Kate, Boxshall, Geoff (2014): An illustrated catalogue of the scalpellid barnacles (Crustacea: Cirripedia: Scalpellidae) collected during the HMS “ Challenger ” expedition and deposited in the Natural History Museum, London. 03B9EA727F0FFF81FF7DFC1C3E24FE58.taxon	discussion	Remarks. When describing Scalpellum nymphocola Hoek (1883) noted that this species “ comes very near to Scalpellum angustum G. O. Sars ”. Withers (1922) pointed out that S. angustum G. O. Sars, 1879 was a homonym of S. angustum Dixon, 1850, a fossil. The name S. sarsi was proposed as a replacement name by Withers (1922), but S. nymphocola is the oldest available name for this taxon. Hoek (1883) also mentioned material from HMS “ Triton ”, Stn 8: Atlantic, Northeast (South of Faroe Islands), 1170 m.
