None of the endemic species of the nominotypical subgenus Metapocyrtus currently known for the island of Mindanao presents a vestiture pattern that resembles M. waoensis sp. nov. The only similar species, is M. lanaoensis sp. nov. The specimens of both species can be distinguished because the pronotum has a band of scales along the posterior margin in M. waoensis; these scales are lacking in M. lanaoensis. Furthermore, M. lanaoensis has a median transverse band spanning the entire width of the elytra and the legs have fine brownish bristles, whereas in M. waoensis the elytral median transverse band is absent and the legs have fine aquamarine-colored bristles. Finally, the two species can be separated thanks to the different forms of the aedeagus (figs. 2A–D and 2D–E) and the everted endophallus (figs. 3A and 3B).

Description. Dimensions: LB: 8.2 mm – 9.5mm (holotype 9.5mm; ā 8.73mm), LR: 1.6 mm – 1.8mm (1.8mm; ā 1.7mm), WR: 1.45mm – 1.55mm (1.55mm; ā 1.48mm), LP: 3mm – 3.3mm (3.3mm; ā 3.1mm), WP: 3.1mm – 3.5mm (3.5mm; ā 3.25mm), LE: 4.8mm – 5.9mm (5.9 mm; ā 5.23mm), WE: 4mm – 4.2mm (4.2mm; ā 4.1mm). N=6

Habitus as shown in Figure 1A–B.

Integument lustrous black. Body dorsally subglabrous, ventrally with some whitish hairs on center of metasternum. Spots formed by coppery scales. Eyes, antennae and tarsomeres black.

Head black with the following markings of coppery scales: a) a stripe from median groove of rostrum to a larger area between eyes; b) a lateral spot under eye and anterior to gena; c) a small dot at base of scrobe. Rostrum rugose, longer than wide, bearing very short yellowish hairs on dorsal and latero-ventral surfaces; dorsal surface with median groove bordered by two swollen dorsolateral ridges. Eyes medium-sized, moderately protruding. Antennal scape as long as funicle, with scattered yellowish setae. Funicular segments I and II subequal in length, three times longer than wide; segments III–VII as long as wide; club sub-ellipsoidal, nearly three times longer than wide.

Pronotum sub-globular (LP/WP 0.95) widest at middle, convex; surface glossy, slightly sulcate, especially on anterior half, by an arrangement of interlacing reticulated lines, with very sparse, short, adpressed yellowish hairs; surface within this reticulation barely convex. A band of coppery scales covers anterior margin, extending laterally and covering lateral margin; a transversal band, less dense in center, basad to center of pronotum. A thick band of scales along posterior margin merges with lateral patch.

Elytra glossy black, oval (LE/WE 1.4), moderately wider than prothorax (WE/WP 1.2), widest at middle, convex; elytral striae formed by shallow punctures; proximal third of interstriae II–III with shallow punctures. Each elytron with three patches of coppery scales: 1) a proximal, transverse band widening towards lateral surface; 2) a lateral line running along elytral edge and merging with proximal band and subapical patch; 3) a large apical sub triangular patch occupying entire corresponding surface of elytra, and centered by a black irregularly triangular area. Metasternum covered by small patch of coppery scales on lateral portion.

Metasternum and ventrite I slightly depressed and with sparse adpressed short bristles.

Legs black with fine aquamarine-colored bristles; femora clavate; tibiae fringed, with pubescence along inner margin. Tarsomeres covered with aquamarine-colored bristles.

Male genitalia as illustrated in Figure 2A–C; everted endophallus as illustrated in Figure 3A.

Female. Dimensions: LB: 9.7mm – 10.9mm (ā 10.14mm); LR: 1.55mm – 1.7mm (ā 1.62mm); WR: 1.4mm – 1.5mm (ā 1.45mm); LP: 2.8mm – 3.15mm (ā 2.95mm); WP: 2.85mm – 3.35mm (ā 3.12mm); LE: 6.4mm – 7.4mm (ā 6.91mm); WE: 4.65mm –5.0mm (ā 4.79mm). N=5

Habitus as shown in Figure 1C–D, F, H.

Otherwise similar to male, with the following distinctions: Pronotum slightly shorter than in male. Elytra wider and longer than in male; with tuft of robust brownish bristles located at apex of elytral declivity (Figure 1C 1), the bristles slightly flattened and oriented medially. Ventrite I simple, not depressed. Tarsi narrower.

Notes on variability in markings. About 30% of the specimens have greenish apical and subapical elytral bands instead of coppery ones (Figure 1H); about 35% of the specimens have the proximal two-thirds of interstriae II–VII, sometimes even VIII, traced by lines of coppery scales (Figure 1E, F), and about 11% have an additional incomplete transverse band in the middle of the elytra (Figure 1G, H).

T ype material.
