This subgenus was proposed according to features of head and male genitalia (Gorochov, 1986). The species of the subgenus should possess a rather strongly angularly curved clypeal suture and a wider gap between antennal cavities, which is no less than 2 times the width of the cavities themselves; and their epiphallus in the form of a narrow transverse sclerite with a pair of posterior lateral processes and ectoparameres with a fully developed arcuate sclerotized ribbon that secondly connects the middle lobe with an ectoparameter (Gorochov, 1986). When established this subgenus, Gorochov (1986) included three species, Gryllus frontalis Fieber, 1844, Gryllulus pallipalpis Tarbinsky, 1940, Gryllulus truncatus Tarbinsky, 1940, within this taxon. And Orthoptera species files (OSF) listed all the species of the genus Modicogryllus under the name of this subgenus except three species of the subgenera of Amodicogryllus and Promodicogryllus (Cigliano, et al., 2021). Referring to illustrations of regarding species (Chopard, 1961; Gorochov, 1978; Gorochov, 1996; Gorochov & Llorente, 2001; Otte & Cade, 1984; Otte, et al., 1988), we considered 24 species as listed above should be included in this subgenus. We included a species, Mirigryllus nigrus He, 2020, recently reported from China. Although the name of Modicogryllus has often appeared in many Chinese species lists, the species bearing this name were finally removed from the lists as their genus status changed. Thus, this species was almost the first true Modicogryllus species recorded in China. Then, Modicogryllus cyprius (Saussure, 1877) and Modicogryllus pseudocyprius Gorochov, 1996 was arranged into the subgenus Amodicogryllus of the genus, we found, however, they are rather resembling with the species of subgenus Modicogryllus although Gorochov (1996) indicated the hind species armed with distinct and large spermatophore sac (Gorochov, 1996). Finally, according to male’s genitalia, Modicogryllus vaturu Otte & Cowper, 2007 possesses features of the genus Mitius and Modicogryllus abrictos Otte, 2007 bears feature of the genus Loxoblemmus, thus, we think these two species should be moved out of the genus Modicogryllus and proposed new combinations of Mitius vaturu comb. nov. and Loxoblemmus abrictos comb. nov.

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/03F987D7FF8E0A03BDD9FCF78D82A0D1	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Chopard (1933) described this species under the genus of Gryllus and moved it into the genus of Modicogryllus (Chopard, 1961), however, in his studies, he did not produce any graphic or describe the features of male genitalia. Gorochov (1996) examined the holotype and he described and illustrated this species. He indicated that the head of this species slightly resembles to the species of the genus Velarifictorus. It might since the similar reason, Yin and Liu (1995) arranged some Velarifictorus specimens (Yin & Liu, 1995: illustr. 182–184) under this name and moved this species from Modicogryllus to the genus Velarifictorus. According to the work of Yin and Liu, He (2018) considered the species Velarifictorus latefasciatus (Chopard, 1933) was junior synonym of Velarifictorus micado (Saussure, 1877). This is a mistake made over and over again and M. latefasciatus is a Modicogryllus species but not of Velarifictorus. This species has not been rediscovered by Chinese for so many years and it is also difficult for us to find it since the type locality is only recorded with the name of Province and without any more information.

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/03F987D7FF8F0A05BDD9F9DD8E75A691	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. As mentioned above, this species is almost the firstly recorded species of the subgenus Modicogryllus in China. He, et al. (2020) described this species under a new genus and he did not refer to any member of Modicogryllus. According to some illustrations, we found this species resembles to M. latefasciatus, Modicogryllus cyprius (Saussure, 1877) and Modicogryllus frontalis (Fieber, 1844). But the transverse stripe above frons of M. nigrus is wide, trim and not as irregular as what of M. latefasciatus, or as thin as what of M. cyprius, and as centrally constricted as what of M. frontalis; and their genitalia are more or less in different shape.

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/03F987D7FF880A05BDD9FE198B2CA4A3	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. This species was recorded in China by Yin and Liu (1995) and we believed that most Chinese species were identified using the references of Chopard (e.g. Chopard, 1969), however, he regarded M. consobrinus as junior synonym of M. confimatus by mistake (Chopard, 1961; Chopard, 1969; Ingrisch, 1998). According to illustration of holotype’s genitalia, Chinese species should be under the name M. consobrinus and, therefore, this species is not found in China now.

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/03F987D7FF890A04BDD9FD368A73A3CF	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Epiphallus without media lobe and lateral lobes away from each other; inner margin of lateral lobe straight or slightly arched. In lateral view, lateral lobe wide with dorsal and bottom margin arched slightly upward. Ectoparamere thin and long, with apical part very long and inward curved.

Female Similar with male. Apex of ovipositor bearing rough surface (Figs. 1B, F).

Remarks. Walker used the name ‘ Gryllus lineiceps’ for twice (Walker, 1869; 1871), he named an Australia species under this name in 1869 and used it again for a Bombay species in 1871. And the regarding name here is the hind one and it is the junior homonym of G. lineiceps Walker, 1869. After available name G. consobrinus used for those Bombay species, Chopard (1967) synonymized it under M. confirmatus by mistake (Ingrisch, 1998). Probably, Yin and Liu (1995) identified Chinese species following Chopard’s mistake and recorded M. consobrinus species under the name M. confirmatus (He, 2018). Then, Ingrisch (1998) re-established this species under the name M. consobrinus and pointed G. lineiceps Walker, 1871 and Modicogryllus walkeri Chopare, 1961 are synonyms of it. And according to male’s genitalia, M. consobrinus, M. confirmatus, M. nandi and M. volivoli could be treated as a species group, their features are very similar to one another other.

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/03F987D7FF890A06BDD9FAA38CDFA22C	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The distinct feature of Gryllodinus species is the clypeus is very large and strongly convex. Three species of the genus were recorded worldwide (Gorochov, 1979). Although they possess similar appearance with each other (Gorochov, 1979; Gorochov, 1986; Uvarov, 1911), the male genitalia are distinct (Gorochov, 1979). Besides overall similarity in this genus, the species also resemble to some species of Modicogryllus and Turanogryllus, from arid areas. G. odicus for example, Uvarov (1911) indicated that it is similar with G. kerkennensis and Turanogryllus lateralis (Fieber, 1853) in coloration and pattern of head and pronotum; and Gorochov (1979) indicated that it similar to M. pallipalpis, M. latefasciatus, M. pseudocyprius, M. nitidus and M. algirius, and very similar to M. pseudocyprius and M. algirius. In this study, the specimens of the genus found in China rather resemble to the species T. lateralis. And we used to confuse these two species so much that when we went to Xinjiang to collect our samples, we mistakenly assumed that the specimens of T. lateralis was the species of Gryllodinus we were looking for. Here is the genus Gryllodinus is initially introduced to China.

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/03F987D7FF8B0A09BDD9F8EA8C2EA55D	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Body sized medium in Gryllinae species. Head and pronotum short, almost as long as apical field of elytra. Occiput short and slightly convex. Vertex inclined. Clypeus very convex proximally and shaped as hemisphere in lateral view; and truncate apically, which oblique inward. Labrum shaped normally and with middle notch apically. Eyes large, its hind and lower margin straight. Rostrum very wide and nearly four times wider than antennal scape. Antennal scape transverse, rectangle-like. Apical three sections of maxillary palpus in equal length; end section of labial palpus slightly longer than the total length of proximal two. Pronotum transverse, two times wider than length; its anterior margin inward concave and almost shaped as obtuse angle, posterior margin straight and lateral margin curved to lateral lobes; lateral lobes of pronotum somewhat flat and conspicuously inward curved posteriorly. Elytral long and longer than three times of the total length of head and pronotum. Lateral margins of elytral almost straight. CuA vein long and the transvers portion broadly arched. Harp area large and harp veins two. Diagonal vein somewhat arc-like. Mirror large and slightly oval shaped. Dividing vein arched and dividing anterior portion larger than the posterior. Apical field rather short, almost as long as the half of mirror and possessing with few of cell. Hindwings present and long, with uncovered portion as long as forewings. Fore tibia only armed with outer tympana, large and shaped as longitudinal oval; the part of inner tympana should present depressed and somewhat crescent. Tarsus very short and as half-length of tibia. Hind tibia short, as half-length of hind femur; subapical spurs five or six, those presenting apically or proximally varied in size. Hind proximal tarsus armed with two rows of spines, numbered five or six respectively and right-left asymmetry. Cercus short and nearly as long as hind tibia.

Coloration. Body colored yellowish brown and ornamented with brown spots or stripes. Vertex and occiput possessing brown and transvers stripes, and several irregular transvers stripes presenting between them. Frons armed with a brown and oval-shaped patch in the middle, which surrounded by ocelli and eyes. Eyes dark brown. Clypeus almost yellowish brown and just armed with few of brown patch under low margin of antennal scape. Pronotum yellowish brown and only colored brown in blade-shaped patterns and portions around them. Fore and middle legs yellowish brown; most parts of hind legs yellowish brown, but dorsum of hind femur ornamented with brown spots medially and apically, and spurs on tibia, spines on tarsus as well as claw colored brown apically. Abdominal tergites and thoracic pleura dark brown, and ventral portions yellowish brown.

Genitalia. Genitalia very similar to Modicogryllus species. Epiphallus widened, with thin lateral lobes and without middle lobe. Epiphallic lateral lobe proximally broad, narrowed at middle and tapering and with acute end. The middle of epiphallus very wide and somewhat longitudinal long, with inner (proximal) part shaped as obtuse angle. Ectoparamere proximally stick-like, middle portions widened and armed with lateral lobe, and apical portions depressed laterally, inwards curved and with acute tip.

Female unknown.

Etymology. The name refers to the locality where discovered it.

Remarks. This species possesses genitalia which is very similar to the species of Modicogryllus, but in Modicogryllus the epiphallus and ectoparamere are shaped simply, and those of the new are varied in thickness and appendant. Of the Modicogryllus, the new one bears endoparamere resembling Modicogryllus pseudocyprius Gorochov, 1996. Then, there are three species of the genus Gryllodinus Bolívar, 1927 worldwide and male’s genitalia of all of these species are rather distinct, and that of the new species is similar to Gryllodinus odicus (Uvarov, 1911) (Gorochov, 1979: figs 7–9). Comparing with G. odicus, epiphallic lateral lobes of the new rather outwardly expanded proximally and the constricting portion in the middle papillary, and these of G. odicus are simple. In addition, the new species owns similar coloration with Turanogryllus lateralis (Fieber, 1853), it might be the result of the similarity of habitat environment.

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/03F987D7FF840A0BBDD9FD408D6CA525	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. The name Eumodicogryllus was proposed as a subgenus of the genus Modicogryllus (Gorochov, 1986) and later elevated as a genus (Defaut, 2001). The species of the genus bear a clypeal suture which is shaped as an angle. At the beginning, Gorochov (Gorochov, 1986) included Eumodicogryllus bordigalensis (= burdigalensis) Latreille, 1804, Eumodicogryllus chivensis (Tarbinsky, 1930) and Tartarogryllus vicinus Chopard, 1968 into this genus. Then, Eumodicogryllus theryi (Chopard, 1943) was moved into this genus (Gorochov & Llorente, 2001). But there is one species, Acheta chinensis Weber, 1801, that has been forgotten after it was misapplied synonymy (Chopard, 1967; Cigliano, et al., 2021). We re-established this species name here and proposed two junior synonyms, E. bordigalensis syn. nov. and E. chivensis syn. nov., of it.

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/03F987D7FF860A0BBDD9FD8D8CD5A34B	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Coloration of this species varied from light to dark. The specimen we describe here is colored light and those darker possess similar patterns with but distinct in ground color. Type locality of M. semiobscurus is India. Chopard (1969) described the holotype and Ingrisch (1998) identified specimens from Thailand as M. semiobscurus and noted differences between specimens from India and Thailand. These differences are mainly in the angle between epiphallic proximal part and lateral lobe, and features of basal part of epiphallus and lateral lobes of epiphallus. According to description and illustration from Chopard (1969) and Ingrisch (1998), we compared male’s genitalia of our specimens with them, epiphallic lateral lobes of the ours are somewhat shorter and thicker (lateral viewed), and the angle between the basal of epiphallus and lateral lobe as well as degree of bending of epiphallic lateral lobes are slightly different.

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/03F987D7FF830A10BDD9F9348D44A028	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Type locality: China, Taiwan, Koshun. Deposited at Taipei University, Taiwan, China (not examined).

Remarks. This species seems to be based on the fact that Shiraki compared this species with Velarifictorus asperses (= Gryllodes berthellus Saussure, 1877) (Walker, 1869) when he established it. Dr. Kim, Tae-Woo and Dr. Yang, Jeng-Tze considered it a species of Velarifictorus in their personal communication (Kim, 2012). Orthoptera species file online (Cigliano, et al., 2021) presents a series of photos of the holotype deposited in Taipei University. According to those pictures and morphological characters, both He (2018) and I think it should be in Turanogryllus. When note that T. eous, was mentioned by Bey-Bienko (1956) and indicated the species under the name Gryllodes koshunensis from Taiwan Island is outwardly similar to T. eous.

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/03F987D7FF9E0A13BDD9FA888C36A0AD	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply. Turanogryllus lateralis (Fieber, 1853) was firstly recorded from southern Russia but without any of illustration, which caused some problem for subsequent research. For example, Randell (1964) studied Turanogryllus eous Bey-Bienko, 1956 from region of Hebei and adjacent places (the information of examined material is ‘Chao Hant, Chili, China, Aug. 29, 1921, A.P. Jacot’) and identified it as T. lateralis. In addition, Randell used features of genitalia of T. eous to substitute for T. lateralis, causing confusion in studies of related species in East Asia. Yin and Liu (1995) recorded a distribution of T. lateralis in Xinjiang, China, but the genitalia of specimen they illustrated in their book (Yin & Liu, 1995: 142, illustr. 193, 194) is of the species of T. eous but not of T lateralis. In addition, Chopard recorded Turanogryllus aelleni (Chopard, 1954) from Iran and there are several photos of holotype on Orthoptera Species File online (OSF) (Cigliano, et al., 2021). We compared it with specimens at hand and identified that they should be considered as the same species, and we propose that T. aelleni is junior synonym of T. lateralis. In fact, although T. lateralis wide spreads of Old World, we almost found there is less illustration for it and we describe and illustrate this species in detail here.

http://treatment.plazi.org/id/03F987D7FF9F0A15BDD9FF708DCDA07D	Public Domain	No known copyright restrictions apply.
